Roundup:

In the first game, Thirdy Ravena led Ateneo’s domination of the UPHSD Junior Altas, 99-55. Ravena put up 21 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 assist in a sublime display of skill and athleticism. He is touted to be the leading candidate for the UAAP Juniors MVP plum this season while also tagged as the leader of an Eaglets squad hungry for redemption after a two-season title drought. Backcourt mates Jolo Mendoza and Mat Nieto also did well with 13 and 12 points respectively. Nobody scored more than 7 points for the hapless Junior Altas.

The second game saw the CEU Lady Scorpions break a tight match open in the fourth quarter in order to beat the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 60-46. CEU limited Ateneo to only 6 points in the final frame while scoring 16 of their own. The Lady Scorpions were led by Ybur Mendoza’s 18 points and 4 assists, while Cheskie Tantoco paced the Lady Eagles with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

In the third game, Don Trollano displayed the ice in his veins when he canned two critical freebies in the dying seconds of Adamson’s big opening win over FEU, 68-67. New African big man Ingrid Sewa had an auspicious debut for the Soaring Falcons, scoring 12 points and grabbing 8 rebounds, while new team leaders Rodney Brondial and Jericho Cruz contributed 10 markers apiece. Not surprisingly, Terrence Romeo led the Tamaraws with 21 points on 8-of-16 FG shooting. He was backstopped by 11 points and 7 boards from Anthony Hargrove.

The fourth game featured a scary DLSU Green Archers unit just running roughshod over the winless SWU Cobras, 98-61. Coach Gee Abanilla’s Greenies shot a red-hot 57% from the field, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, with Almond Vosotros’s 7-of-9 clip leading the way. The former Staglet ended up with 17 points on top of 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Big men Norbert Torres and Jason Perkins also continued to do well, pairing up for 28 points, 9 boards, and 5 dimes in an imposing show of force. High-flying sophomore Gabby Reyes also brimmed with confidence, tossing in 10 markers together with 6 caroms. Monbert Arong scored 13 points to lead the Cobras, who fell to 0-3.

The last match of the day saw Ateneo falter in the second half and absorb its first defeat of the tourney at the hands of UST, 63-57. Once again, Aljon Mariano led the Tigers with 19 points and 5 rebounds, while Karimi Abdul took full advantage of the Eagles’ thin frontline, scoring 14 points and hauling down 11 boards. Lanky swingman Kevin Ferrer also did well, contributing 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The Tigers played without coach Pido Jarencio for the second straight game as the bemedaled mentor is reportedly in sick bay. Unlike in their previous match, the Eagles struggled with rebounding here even with newcomer Chris Newsome registering an impressive double-double line – 14 points and 12 rebounds. Once again, third-year standout Von Pessumal scored heavily, finishing with 15 points on 5-of-10 FG shooting, while Kiefer Ravena struggled with UST’s aggressive on-ball defense, making just 3-of-18 shots from the floor.
