The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: May 11, 2013 Roundup

This time it was Tata Bautista who provided the endgame heroics for UST even as Mike Tolomia led FEU past UP, and the NU Bulldogs stretched their win streak to seven games.

In the day’s first game, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws earned win #2 at the expense of the San Sebastian Staglets, 69-65, behind the 30-point explosion of southpaw JJ Domingo. JJ was unconscious from long range, hitting 7 threes to tow the Diliman-based Baby Tams into a three-way tie for second place in Group B with the Staglets and the Mapua Red Robins. Beanpole Richard Escoto backstopped Domingo with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while SSC was led by Mike Calisaan and Rhanzel Yong, who scored 20 and 16 markers respectively.

The second game saw the UST Tigresses hike their slate to 3 wins and 1 loss following their win over the Saint Benilde Lady Blazers, 66-60. Marian Mejia led UST with 20 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals, while CSB was paced by Jen Mayol’s 19 points, 11 boards, and 5 dimes. Mejia got ample support from Janine Ong, who finished with 13 markers and 8 caroms. The Lady Blazers fell to 1-2 in Group A action.

In the third game, the National University Bulldogs won their seventh straight game by blasting the Arellano University Chiefs, 86-71. It was a pretty tight contest in the first 20 minutes of play before NU leaned on a big third quarter to get some separation and cruise to an immaculate 7-0 record. Alfred Aroga had 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead NU, which also got significant contributions from Jay-J Alejandro and Denice Villamor. Alejandro and Villamor each hit two triples to finish with 12 and 10 points respectively. James Forrester and Nard Pinto each dropped 15 markers in AU’s second straight defeat.

The fourth game featured a close encounter between sister schools UST and Letran. The Knights from Muralla actually led most of the way before the Growling Tigers of España mounted a searing rally in the final frame to steal the win, 78-77. Tata Bautista connected on the game-winning lay-up with 3.7 seconds left to complete UST’s rise from as many as 17 points down. Bautista finished with 17 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals, backing up Robin Tan at the PG position. Aljon Mariano led the Tigers anew, scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, while Kevin Ferrer contributed 15 markers in 20 minutes of play. UST’s Karim Abdul did not play after arriving late to the game. He was sent home by the UST coaching staff. Letran, for its part, leaned on the continued brilliance of Raymond Almazan. The 6’7 center scored 17 points, hauled down 6 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots to pace the Knights’ attack. Pint-sized Mark Cruz scored 13 points in support, while Jamil Gabawan tallied a double-double line – 13 points and 10 boards – in the loss. Both teams now have identical 3-win, 2-loss slates.

The final match of the day resulted in FEU’s third win and the fourth straight defeat for UP. It was a little closer than expected, however, as the Tamaraws played sans Terrence Romeo, who was not feeling well. Mike Tolomia capitalized on this opportunity to pace the Tams’ scoring effort – he banged in 3 triples on his way to 15 points. Nobody else scored more than 9 points for coach Nash Racela. Anthony Hargrove had 9 markers while RR Garcia and Russel Escoto each tossed in 8 points. The Fighting Maroons finally lived up to their moniker in this one, sticking with the FEU side until the end. Former Green Archer Tata Marata led the way with 23 points, hitting 8 of his 10 attempts from the 2-point area, while Chris Ball was a perfect 3-of-3 from rainbow country on his way to 17 markers. Ball also hauled down an uber-impressive 17 rebounds. FEU moved up to 3-2, while UP sank to 0-4.
