Ralf Olivarez broke out against the Growling Tigers.

Roundup:

In the day’s opener, the San Beda Red Cubs leaned on a strong fourth quarter to beat the NU Bullpups, 74-66. Arvin Tolentino was dominant, registering 21 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The former Energen Pilipinas RP-Youth team standout is expected to be the leading candidate for the NCAA Juniors MVP this season and is rumored to be a sure-recruit for the De La Salle Green Archers next year. Fellow RP-Youth players Rev Diputado and Radge Tongco backed him up with 16 and 13 markers respectively. Former College of San Benildo stalwart Javee Mocon also did well with SEVEN blocks. On the other end, coach Jeff Napa’s wards were led by the combined 37 points of Chino Mosqueda and Hubert Cani, while the big man duo of John Cauilan and Mark Dyke paired up to haul down a total of 24 rebounds. The Cubs remained steady at 3-0, while the Bullpups absorbed their second loss in four games.

The second game saw the Lyceum Lady Pirates turn a tight encounter into a rout. LPU utilized a strong second half to blitz the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 68-53. The game actually started tight, with both teams neck-and-neck in the first half, which ended 27-25 in Lyceum’s favor. And then the Lady Pirates upped their effort in the second half to run away with just their first win in four tries. The Lady Eagles, meanwhile, absorbed their third loss in as many games. Mhean Vasquez led all scorers with 20 points on the strength of 6 triples, while Janelle Mendoza tossed in 14 markers and grabbed 9 boards for LPU. The Ateneans were led by Sami Bo-ot and Jonette Uy de Ong, who tallied 14 and 11 markers respectively.

Mhean Vasquez was deadly from long range.

In the third game, the Adamson Soaring Falcons powered through the fourth quarter en route to their third victory in five games, beating the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 80-63. Jericho Cruz and Ingrid Sewa formed a potent two-headed monster for coach Leo Austria. Cruz scored 25 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists, while Sewa netted 24 markers and hauled down 12 boards. Mark Romero, meanwhile, was the only CSB player in double-figures with 21 points on 9-of-15 FG shooting. Sewa worked with Rodney Brondial as Adamson outrebounded the smaller CSB frontcourt all throughout the match. The Blazers fell to 2-4 in the standings.

Ingrid Sewa has been impressive over the summer.

The fourth game featured an unexpectedly lopsided win in favor of the short-handed UE Red Warriors. Due to his being late in arriving at the venue, UE “import” Charles Mammie was benched by coach Boysie Zamar despite the fact they were going up against one of the Finalists from UAAP Season 75. As it turned out, Mammie wasn’t really needed anyway. Former CESAFI star Ralf Olivarez poured in 17 points on a flawless shooting display (7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line) as the Reds surprised the UST Growling Tigers, 85-68. Adrian Santos was rock-solid down low with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Roi Sumang did well as the primary playmaker, scoring 15 points and handing out 8 dimes. Former RP-Youth player Jay-ar Sumido also did well, making all four of his rainbow attempts to finish with 16 points. UST was actually able to trim the lead to as low as three points, 59-56, late in the third quarter before UE regained its bearings and unleashed another scoring bomb bridging the last two periods. The forward pair of Aljon Mariano and Jeric Teng spearheaded the Tigers’ attack with 15 and 13 points respectively. Starting center Karim Abdul was relatively quiet with just 5 points, all from the free throw line. UE improved its slate to 4-2, while UST went down to 3-3.

Jay-ar Sumido was perfect from long distance.

The final match of the day resulted in the San Beda Red Lions earning their third win of the tourney at the expense of the FEU Tamaraws, 80-76. Arthur Dela Cruz and Ola Adeogun anchored the Bedans’ interior, combining for 33 points and 16 rebounds, while Ryusei Koga and Baser Amer took care of the sniping and finished with a combined 19 markers. FEU actually managed to outrebound the Lions thanks mainly to the efforts of Mark Belo, Carl Cruz, and Roger Pogoy, but the Tams shot just 37% from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times compared to just 10 for San Beda. RR Garcia led the way with 23 points and 4 assists, while Mike Tolomia added 15 markers. That pair shot a total of 7 triples, but they also coughed up 7 turnovers. FEU fell to 3 wins against 3 losses.

Ola Adeogun matches up against

RR Garcia waxed hot, but FEU still lost.
