The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: June 7, 2013 Roundup

It will be the unbeaten favorites against the upstart Finalists in 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup. The NU Bulldogs will have an unlikely team in the way of their quest for a Filoil repeat – the UE Red Warriors.

In Friday’s first game, the San Sebastian Staglets clinched third place in the Juniors division after beating the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 72-64. Despite what the score might suggest, it was actually a dominant win by Baste, who also beat the Eaglets in the elimination round. Rhanzel Yong, Alfren Gayosa, and Michael Calisaan dominated an Ateneo frontline that lacked one of its main weapons – Jme Escaler, who was out with an ankle injury. That Baste trio registered a combined 45 points and 32 rebounds, while the Eaglets were led by Mike Nieto and Aaron Black, who scored 13 apiece.

The second game saw the UST Tigresses rally from a halftime deficit to defeat the CEU Lady Scorpions, 68-67. Janine Ong hit 5 triples to topscore for UST with 19 points, while Marian Mejia and Maica Cortes each netted a double-double. Mejia had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Cortes had 13 markers and 11 boards. The Scorpion enjoyed a 21-point production from Ybur Mendoza, who also grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Apet Pontejos backstopped her with 17 points. This was UST’s fourth win in six games, while the Scorpions ended their campaign with a 3-3 card.

In the third game, the UE Red Warriors upset Season 75 UAAP Finalists UST, 77-75. Former Letran Squires Roi Sumang and JM Noble joined import Charles Mammie in leading the Warriors in scoring. Each of those players put in 16 points, with Mammie adding 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. It was a morale-boosting win for UE, which rallied in the payoff period after trailing for most of the game. Kevin Ferrer hit three triples and ended up with 19 points to lead the Tigers, who lost their fourth game of the summer league. Karim Abdul had 14 points and 13 rebounds for UST while Jeric Teng and Aljon Mariano each tossed in a dozen markers. UE has been on a tear this summer, with this counted as their eighth win in ten games.

UE made the Filoil Finals for the first time in history.

The final match of the day resulted in the San Beda Red Lions succumbing to the unbeaten NU Bulldogs, 74-57. It was a close game in the first half, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the last two quarters. Denice Villamor and Gelo Alolino stepped up for the Bulldogs, scoring 18 and 15 points respectively. Villamor added 6 rebounds, while Alolino filled the sheet with 7 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Emmanuel Mbe also had 11 and 10 for the 10-0 NU squad while Ray Parks scored 12 markers. The underperforming Bedans were led by Baser Amer’s 19 points, while Arthur Dela Cruz had 16 points and 10 boards. UST and SBC dispute third place on Wednesday, while the Bulldogs collide with the Warriors for the top prize.
