POWER RANKINGS:
These rankings are based on each team's Cumulative Efficiency Ratings
(CER - sum of all its players' efficiency ratings as calculated by
PBA-Online.net) AND its wins. The formula I used was this:
Team EFF = CER + (# of wins x 70)
I gave each win a value of 70 stat points simply because the average
score for each of the college teams in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason
Premier Cup (based on Statsboard.com) was 72.45ppg. I just rounded that down to
an even 70.
Despite the limitations of the statistical basis, I believe that these
rankings still generally reflect a balance of "how good each team has
been" and "how good each team is projected to be."
I’m 110% sure not everyone will agree with the following rankings, but
that was never the point anyway. As long as this fosters discussion and gives
fodder for tabletop discourse, then all’s good. Well, hopefully.

1) FEU Tamaraws (6-wins,
0-losses, 696.5 Team EFF)
This is the world we live in now – FEU is one away from
sweeping the first round. Wasn’t this the team that only about two months ago
suspended its best player for his attitude? What is coach Nash feeding his wards
anyway? Whatever it is, it’s working wonders.
2) UST Growling Tigers
(4-wins, 2-losses, 496.8 EFF)
It’s quite impressive that UST is holding the fort at #2
despite Jeric Teng still nursing his shoulder injury. That’s thanks mainly to
the Black & Gold frontline getting the job done – 48 points and 24 rebounds
against the hapless Maroons.
3) NU Bulldogs (3-wins,
3-losses, 465.8 Team EFF)
Despite Ray Parks and Emmanuel Mbe pairing up for 32 points
and 24 rebounds, the Bulldogs still lost to the Falcons. Not a good sign if
you’re coach Eric Altamirano. Another not-so-good sign? Gelo Alolino going
2-of-9 from the field.
4) DLSU Green Archers
(3-wins, 3-losses, 437.5 Team EFF)
Was there an unsportsmanlike foul, or was there no foul?
It’s a great talking point for a round of beer and sisig, but if you’re coach
Juno Sauler you couldn’t care less. What coach Juno cares about (I’m sure) is
how his team let the Falcons climb back from a double-digit deficit late in the
fourth a few days after they got the rug pulled from under them by the next
team on this list.
5) UE Red Warriors (3-wins,
3-losses, 434.1 EFF)
Great comeback against DLSU puts UE right in the middle. Roi
Sumang and Charles Mammie will be the constants for this team, but coach Boysie
needs a consistent #3 guy. Against the Archers, that guy was Chris Javier, who
dropped 16 points. Still waiting on Ralf Olivares to explode big time, though.
6) Adamson Soaring
Falcons (3-wins, 3-losses, 426.3 Team EFF)
Loved the way Adamson upended NU, but hated the way things
ended against DLSU. I still think the Falcons are a mighty dangerous squad, but
one has to wonder how losing like that can affect the mindset of any team.

7) Ateneo Blue Eagles
(2-win, 4-losses, 373.7 EFF)
Ateneo fans have to continue tempering expectations despite
the Eagles getting win #2. It, after all, was just UP. Still, that Newsome
alley-oop? Man, can anybody say dunk of the year this early?
8) UP Fighting Maroons
(0-wins, 6-losses, 244.3 Team EFF)
Man. I feel so bad for these guys. It’s a good thing there’s
no such thing as relegation in the UAAP.
