Notes:
Team Sinag Pilipinas continued to roll in the 2013
SEA Games, earning two blowout wins against Cambodia and Myanmar respectively.
Despite the Pinoys being the most dominant team so far, however, it seems like
the Singaporeans have been the ones really turning heads as they bounced back
from an 0-2 start to beat Malaysia and Indonesia in succession.

Rebounding from its closer-than-expected result
against Singapore, Sinag Pilipinas was relentless in assaulting the severely overmatched
Cambodians and Burmese. Mark Belo and Ronald Pascual were the most impressive
in these two wins, as the former asserted himself down low, while the latter
hit a total of 8 triples in those two contests. FEU standout Belo averaged around
17 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal these past couple of days, and this was made
all the more impressive because he comes off the bench and averaged just 15
minutes per outing. Now THAT is efficient ballin’. Pascual, meanwhile, has been
on-target. The former San Sebastian cager drilled 16 points against Cambodia
and then dropped 20 on the home squad to lead Sinag’s rise in the standings.
Coach Jong Uichico’s wards are now sitting atop the heap alongside Thailand.
Both teams tote 3-0 cards. Another guy who has really shone for Sinag is Ray
Parks. Parks tallied a double-double against Cambodia – 10 points and 11
rebounds – and then followed it up with 10 markers, 5 boards, and 4 dimes
versus the Burmese.
In the meantime, Singapore enjoyed back-to-back wins
at the expense of usual tormentors Malaysia and Indonesia. In a tight contest a
couple of days ago, the Singaporeans defeated their cross-border neighbors in
an international competition for the first time since 1979. Wei Long Wong
scored 17 points in this win, while Larry Liew and Russel Low tossed in 13 and
11 markers respectively. Two days after that, Singapore reeled in its second win,
this time beating Indonesia in rather convincing fashion, 62-48. Once again,
Wong top-scored for the Singaporeans, tallying 14 markers, while, again Liew
and Low backstopped him with 12 and 11 points respectively. Singapore leaned on
great outside shooting to win both jousts, making a total 19 triples out of 38
tries for a very impressive 50% clip. Another big factor was their defense,
which held erstwhile leading scorer Shee Fai Loh of Malaysia to just 5 points
on 2/7 shooting while also allowing nobody from the Indonesian side to score
more than 9 points. Singapore is now fourth in the standings with an even 2-2
slate, but with just Cambodia and Myanmar standing in its way, it sure looks
like this small nation is primed to claim the bronze medal.

Another impressive team has been Thailand, which has
gone unbeaten after three matches. In their most recent fixtures, the Thais
beat Indonesia and Cambodia. Danai Kongkum and Ratdech Kruatiwa have been the
hot hands for Thailand in these last couple of games, with both guys averaging
15 points. Sukhdave Ghogar has also been doing well, norming 11 points and
nearly 12 rebounds in the the Thais’ past two assignments. The Thais battle the
Pinoys today, with the victor coming out as the virtual gold medalist already.
Today’s other match-ups feature Malaysia versus Myanmar,
and Singapore against Cambodia.
