In this Position
Battle post, we will focus on the top five point guards at this point in the
season. We will take into account just the players’ stats for the latest five
games of their respective teams. This will, hopefully, give us a more current
picture of each player’s production.
With Chris
Paul not exactly his old self yet, the race is really wide open for the best PG
in the NBA right now. The obvious choice outside of CP3, of course, is GSW’s
Steph Curry, but how about other young guns like Kyrie Irving, John Wall, or
Damian Lillard? You might be surprised, especially since an old favorite makes
an appearance at #2!!!
Note: All of the following stats are based on each
player’s stats as computed by HoopsStats.com. They were taken on February
11, 2014 (Manila time).
5. Brandon Jennings (DET) - 24.4ppg, 3.8rpg,
8.4apg, 1.6spg, 3.4 triples per game, .886 FT%, 23.8 EFF
The Pistons
are one of the suckiest teams out there (just ask Mo Cheeks), but don’t tell
that to Jennings, who has been enjoying one of his most productive NBA seasons
yet. And, well, Detroit has won three straight, including today’s surprising
win over the Spurs. It was Motor City’s first W under new coach John Loyer. As
for Jennings, he didn’t do too badly, dropping 21 points, 6 assists, 4
rebounds, and 2 steals on the TP9 and the Spurs.
4. John Wall (WAS) - 22.4ppg, 4.2rpg, 8.6apg,
3.2spg, 1.0bpg, 1.4 triples per game, .821 FT%, 24.6 EFF
What I like
about John Wall is that he has been a beast this season and that his awesome
play might actually result in the Wizards making the Playoffs! Yes, the Wizards
in the Playoffs!!! It’s too crazy, but I think it’s gonna happen. The highlight
of last week? How about his 17-point, 15-assist, 6-steal effort as the Wiz beat
Kevin Durant and the Thunder?
3. Goran Dragic (PHX) - 26.8ppg, 4.6rpg, 6.0apg,
1.4spg, .605 FG%, 2.4 triples per game, .571 3pt%, 27.4 EFF
Definitely
one of the biggest snubs in the All-Star Game, but the Slovenian superstar
continues to take names anyway. Along with Gerald Green, Dragic is the biggest
reason the Suns might be the season’s best underdog story. His latest
masterpiece? Dropping 32 and 10 on the Warriors and the number one guy on this
list.
2. Rajon Rondo (BOS) - 14.0ppg, 7.7rpg, 11.0apg,
2.0spg, .613 FG%, 1.3 triples per game, 28.3 EFF
Holy crap it’s
Rajon Rondo!!! Yes, the Celtics are too awful for their own good and Rondo is
too good not to be on a winning team, but that’s the reality they have been
given, so there. When healthy, though, Rondo remains one of the planet’s
craftiest playmakers. I mean, he’s norming close to a triple-double with around
2 steals to boot! Part of me wants him traded to an East contender, so he can
beat the Heat down the road.
1. Steph Curry (GSW) - 29.0ppg, 2.8rpg, 8.0apg,
.570 FG%, 4.0 triples per game, .500 3pt%, .905 FT%, 29.8 EFF
Yes, the
Warriors have been an up-and-down team in more than one way, but let’s not
forget what makes them so exciting – those awesome three-bombs from the Splash
Brothers! Curry is still a long way from being in the Top Five PGs of All-Time
convo, but, should he continue to play this boldly (or recklessly), then he
might just crack that select set. Thanks to his awesome touch, GSW has won 4 of
its last 6 games to remain in the West’s top eight. Did you see him drop 44 on
Utah to end January? Sweet curry.
Outside
looking in:
Damian Lillard (POR) - 22.4 EFF
Kyrie Irving (CLE) - 22.2 EFF
Jordan Farmar (LAL) - 22.0 EFF
