In the first game, Rain or Shine blasted GlobalPort, 99-75.
Wayne Chism had a triumphant debut for Rain or Shine, scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to help the Painters net their third win in six games. Chism also led the team in assists with 5, showcasing his versatility, aggressiveness, and athleticism. Unlike the Painters’ previous import, Alex Mclean, who averaged six three-point attempts per game, Chism didn’t fall in love with the outside shot. The 6’9 Tennessee native stuck to his main strength, which was making his way inside and trying to finish around the basket.
To say that GlobalPort’s chief backcourt trio — Terrence Romeo, Alex Cabagnot, and RR Garcia — didn’t shoot well in this one is a gross understatement. They. Shot. Awful. Cabaggie shot 3/12 from the field, Garcia made just 2 of his 13 FG attempts, and Romeo missed all 4 of his shots. Ugly doesn’t even begin to describe their performance.
Leethal Indeed: On the other end of the floor, Gilas Pilipinas hopeful Paul Lee was the complete opposite. Lee made all but one of his 6 three-point attempts on his way to 7/10 FG shooting and 21 points overall. The former UE Red Warrior just couldn’t be stopped here, and it will be pretty interesting to see if he can keep up this torrid pace as the Painters aim for a favorable match-up in the next round.
In the main game, Talk N Text weathered the storm against San Mig Super Coffee, 81-75.
The Texters waxed hot in the first half, utilizing sharp outside shooting and exploiting the Mixers’ cold spell to mount an 18-0 run that really opened things up. By halftime, TNT held an 18-point lead it would never relinquish.
The Mixers, meanwhile, were groping for form. Top guns PJ Simon, James Yap, Mark Barroca, Marc Pingris, and Joe Devance were all struggling with their shots. Only Ian Sangalang and Alex Mallari shone really brightly for SMC, but they were curiously subbed out in the waning minutes in favor of the Mixers’ struggling regulars. Sangalang made all seven of his field goals on his way to 15 points, while Mallari pocketed 9 markers and helped spark SMC’s comeback in the fourth quarter. This was the Mixers’ second loss in a row after they won their first three games of the conference.
Here’s a fact: Richard Howell is the perfect fit for TNT. He fills in the Texters’ doughnut hole at center, scoring in the block and hauling down those boards. He attracts defenders around the basket, which makes seams look a little wider for the Texters’ wingmen. He’s also not a ball-dominant import, preferring to just get the ball in his sweet spots instead of forcing the issue. Should TNT reach the promised land this conference, there is no doubt Howell would be a huge part of that success.

RAIN OR SHINE over GLOBALPORT, 99-75
The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters dominated in the fourth quarter to cruise to a blowout win over still winless GlobalPort, 99-75, in PLDT Home TVolution PBA Commissioner’s Cup action on Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Paul Lee topscored with 21 points while import Wayne Chism debuted with 17 markers as the Elasto Painters picked up a second straight victory to improve to 3-3 for the conference.
Rain or Shine entered the fourth period with a double-digit lead but really put the hammer down with a big 13-2 run that put them up by a whopping 26 points, 95-69, late in the game.
After a tight first quarter, Chism helped the Elasto Painters gain some breathing room, scoring six points in a 12-2 blast that turned a slight two-point edge into a 44-32 Rain or Shine lead in the second quarter.
They entered the half leading 51-38.
Rain or Shine maintained the lead in the third as the squads each scored 24 points in the quarter.
But Lee opened the fourth with a trey and Chris Tiu added two free throws to make it an 18-point lead, 80-62, for Rain or Shine.
GlobalPort cut it back down to just 15, 82-67, but Rain or Shine unleashed their big run to put the game away.
Chism opened it with a dunk while Larry Rodriguez scored in transition and Tiu added a trey to make it seven straight points for the Elasto Painters.
Justin Chua scored in the post to give the Batang Pier some signs of life, but a basket by Jonathan Uyloan and back-to-back hits by Ryan Arana pushed the difference to a high of 26 points, 95-69, with little time to make it up.
Raymund Almazan and Tiu also finished in double figures, scoring 13 and 10, respectively.
Import Evan Brock led GlobalPort with 25 points but could not keep the team from dropping its seventh straight game.

TALK N TEXT over SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE, 81-75
The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters kept their unbeaten run in the PLDT Home TVolution PBA Commissioner’s Cup going after holding off San Mig Coffee, 81-75, on Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
With the win, Talk ‘N Text ensured that they would finish with at least a top two berth and clinched the twice-to-beat quarterfinal advantage that goes with it.
The streaking Tropang Texters, which now hold a league-best 7-0 record, built a huge first half lead but had to fight off a hard-charging Mixers’ squad in the fourth quarter.
Import Richard Howell led Talk ‘N Text with 25 points and 21 big rebounds while Ranidel De Ocampo and Jayson Castro each added 13 for the undefeated Tropang Texters.
The league leaders looked on their way to a romp after scoring 18 unanswered points en route to a lopsided 21-point lead, 42-21, in the second quarter.
Talk ‘N Text found its touch from the outside in that rally as De Ocampo, who scored eight points in the run, hit two three-pointers while Castro and KG Canaleta knocked down one apiece.
They entered the halftime break ahead by a huge 44-26 margin.
Their lead held above the 20-point mark for most of the third but San Mig Coffee made a late 9-2 run in the third to cut it down to 13, 59-46, at the end of the period.
Howell opened the fourth strong, scoring the first two baskets to boost the Talk ‘N Text lead back up to 17, 63-46.
But the Mixers battled back with an 11-0 run behind swingman Alex Mallari, who scored five points and had an assist on a James Yap basket to cap the rally.
With their lead down to just six points, the Tropang Texters needed someone to stem the tide and they found that in Larry Fonacier, who drained a tripe to end the drought, and Castro, who restored a double-digit edge with two free throws to make it, 68-57.
They were later able to put the lead back up to 15 points, 79-64, after Howell recovered from a block by sticking back his own shot and Fonacier hit another one from long range with about three minutes left to play.
San Mig Coffee import James Mays then scored five straight points on a dunk and a triple but Howell had one last answer, scoring inside to make it 81-69 with under two minutes to play.
The Mixers could only come to as close as six points in the end.
San Mig Coffee, which started the conference with three consecutive wins, has now dropped back-to-back games and settled with a 3-2 mark.
Mays scored 27 points but Sangalang was the only local to reach double figures with 15.
