The 2014 SEABA
U18 Championships in Sabah, Malaysia kicked off yesterday with the Philippines plastering
Indonesia and the home team outplaying Singapore.

In the first
game of the day, the Filipinos had no trouble at all disposing of the
overmatched Indons, 98-35. Batang Gilas Pilipinas, coached by multi-titled
mentor Jamike Jarin, dominated from the start, outscoring Indonesia, helmed by
Pinoy coach Brit Reroma, 23-8, in the first canto and never looking back. The
Filipinos overpowered Indonesia on the glass, 57-33, with 2013 FIBA World 3x3 Championship
competitor Thirdy Ravena hauling down 11 boards. Coach Jarin’s wards were also relentless
on defense, stealing the basketball 21 times en route to forcing 31 Indon
turnovers. Once again, it was Ravena, along with Mark Dyke, who led the way
with 4 steals. Backcourt duo Jollo Go and Radge Tongco took care of the scoring
load here, making 18 and 13 points respectively. Go waxed hot from long range,
draining 5 triples in just 16 minutes of play. On the other end, veteran youth
team player Vincent Kosasih, led Indonesia with 10 points on 4/4 FG shooting
and 2 rebounds.

The second
game of the day featured the Malaysians turning back Singapore, 82-74. Malaysia
led most of the way here, and looked to cruise to victory till the Singaporeans
rallied in the fourth period to cut the deficit to single digits. After trailing
by 18 at the half, coach Yao Kwang Ong’s wards charged back in the second half
to put up a challenge. In the end, however, Malaysia’s cushion proved to be
enough to preserve the hosts’ first win in the three-day tourney. Guards Yi Hou
Wong and Joon Lock Wee led Malaysia with a combined 5 triples and 41 points.
Center Anthony Liew anchored the middle with a 10-point, 10-rebound,
double-double, while Wing Jet Tan dropped 16 off the pine. The losing side was
paced by forwards Han Xingyuan and Leon Kwek, who tallied 20 and 14 markers
respectively as well as a combined 15 boards.
