The 2014 SEABA U18 Championships in Sabah, Malaysia saw
both the Philippines and Malaysia qualifying for the 2014 FIBA Asia U18 Championships
in Doha, Qatar.
Batang Gilas Pilipinas beat Malaysia and Singapore in
succession en route to sweeping the competition in the 2014 SEABA U18 tourney.
Two days ago, they beat the hosts, 93-76, behind balanced production from Radge
Tongco, Thirdy Ravena, Paul Desiderio, and Jollo Go. A day after, Batang Gilas
continued practically unmolested, blasting the hapless Singaporeans, 124-63, to
reassert their dominance as the region’s hoops power. Seven Pinoys scored in
double-figures here, led by Paul Desiderio, Dave Yu, and Andrei Caracut, who
scored 17, 16, and 16 points respectively.

The hosts, Malaysia, also advanced by virtue of
beating Indonesia last night, 83-60. The Malaysian’s finished with a 2-1 record
after this result, and, like the Pinoys, will represent SEABA in the Doha
joust. They were the only ones to actually put up a semblance of a fight
against the Philippines. In their game two days ago, Malaysia even led at the
end of the first quarter, 20-18. They kept it close throughout most of the
second half, too, before the Filipinos unloaded a strong finish to peg the
final difference at 17 markers. And just yesterday, Malaysia leaned on strong
rebounding and shooting to dominate Indonesia, 83-60. Joon Lock Wee led the
hosts with 4 triples on his way to 20 points while Anthony Liew tallied 12
markers and 14 boards.
