Let's welcome Season 77 with our first UAAP Position Battle post ever! |
Week 1 of the UAAP has passed, and it was
definitely a doozy. We were treated to a lot of statement games, most notably
the huge wins by FEU and NU over DLSU and UST respectively.
Now it’s time to take stock and reward the best
performers of Season 77’s opening weekend.
Let’s look at the best players per
position and the best ones overall.

Center: Chris Javier (UE) - 12pts, 9rebs, 1ast, 1blk, .667 FG%, 34.3 EFF
- Javier isn’t the hottest name on the UE roster (that’s reserved for either Roi Sumang or Charles Mammie), but he was the most productive this past weekend, putting up a near double-double against the lowly Maroons.

Power Forward: Ivan Villanueva (ADU) - 15pts, 9rebs, 1ast, .667 FG%, 38.8 EFF
- This rookie big man from the Letran Squires’ program surprised a lot of people with his agility and soft touch, mainly because he looked the part of a hefty bruiser. This early, he has already drawn comparisons to cousin Enrico Villanueva and PBA slotman Beau Belga. Not too shabby.

Small Forward: Chris Newsome (ADMU) - 12pts, 8rebs, 3asts, 1stl, 2blks, .556
FG%, 34.7 EFF
- Newsome broke through his first UAAP season and showcased his athleticism, but this year he wants to prove he can be an all-around threat and a leader. I’d say he’s off to a brilliant start.

Shooting Guard: Kiefer Ravena (ADMU) - 22pts, 4rebs, 4asts, 3stls, 1blk, .500
FG%, 42.0 EFF
- There’s no doubt that Kiefer wants to prove a point this season — that he is the best player in the collegiate ranks. After such an immaculate stat-line against the Soaring Falcons, he has, so far, been proven right.

Point Guard: Dan Alberto (UE) - 15pts, 1reb, 2asts, 5 triples, .556 FG%, 30.3
EFF
- Alberto hijacked UP by draining 5 triples. He’s also not the UE point guard you’re probably expecting to see on this list, but, hey, again, FIVE THREE-POINTERS. Wow.

Rookie: Ivan Villanueva (ADU) - 15pts, 9rebs, 1ast, .667 FG%, 38.8 EFF
- Unlike a lot of other newcomers are on UAAP fans’ watch lists, Villanueva flew through the preseason relatively under the radar. That’s about to change.
