SAN MIGUEL
BEERMEN over NLEX ROAD WARRIORS, 79-76
The San Miguel Beermen endured miserable free throw
shooting in the endgame to escape with a 79-76 win over the NLEX Road Warriors
at the Mindanao Civic Center gym in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. Arwind Santos
posted 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Beermen, who almost allowed NLEX
to steal the victory after missing four of their six free throws down the
stretch that could have sealed the game earlier for San Miguel Beer. The
vistors improved to a 4-1 record, while NLEX settled for a 2-3 slate. Former
Gilas shooting guard Marcio Lassiter led the Beermen with 22 points on the
strength of 4 triples, while fellow perimeter player Chris Lutz pumped in 13
markers. The power pairing of June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos clicked anew,
combining for 23 points, 24 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. On the other end,
the Road Warriors drew 19 markers from Mac Cardona, who shot 7/11 from the
field. Meanwhile, Asi Taulava and Aldrech Ramos tried to hold the fort in the
middle with 13 and 11 points respectively.

GLOBALPORT
BATANG PIER over BLACKWATER ELITE, 87-72
The GlobalPort Batang Pier, again playing without
one-third of their ‘three-headed monster’, crushed expansion team Blackwater
behind a big third quarter run to grab an 87-72 victory. Ronjay Buenafe led
GlobalPort, which climbed to 3-2 in the team standings, with 17 points, while
rookie Anthony Semerad had a stellar showing, scoring 16 points on 6/7 FG
shooting. Sophomore guard Terrence Romeo missed the game, but his fellow star
guards Alex Cabagnot and Stanley Pringle both had solid performances for the
Batang Pier. Pringle had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, while
Cabagnot flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 9 points, 11 rebounds and
9 assists in the contest. Keith Jensen also impressed with 14 points for
GlobalPort. Bam Gamalinda actually had a hot start for Blackwater in this one,
scoring 13 first quarter points, but he only tallied two more the rest of the
way. Bryan Faundo came off the pine with 16 points and 10 boards to pace the
Elite, which dropped its fifth game in a row.
Line of the
Game: Alex Cabagnot - 9 points, 11
rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals.

GINEBRA GIN KINGS over PUREFOODS STAR HOTSHOTS, 89-66
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel came out victorious in
the first ‘Manila Clasico’ duel of the 40th PBA season after a 23-point win
over Purefoods, 89-66. Joseph Yeo came up big in his first Ginebra-Purefoods
clash, scoring a game-high 17 points, including five three-pointers, and
dishing out five assists to lead Ginebra to a 4-1 record. Greg Slaughter and Billy
Mamaril backed him up as both had double-doubles in the game. Slaughter
finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Mamaril chipped in 12 and 13. In
the meantime, Mac Baracael scored 13 points and Japeth Aguilar added 11 points
and 8 boards for Ginebra. The Ginebra starting unit of LA Tenorio, Yeo,
Aguilar, Baracael, and Mamaril got the Kings off to a great start, as they
scored the first 10 points of the game, all of which came from jumpers.
Purefoods tightened up on the defensive end after those first four minutes, but
the entry of Slaughter and Mark Caguioa off the bench pushed Ginebra to clos
the quarter on a 7-1 run to lead, 19-10. The Gin Kings never looked back after
that. PJ Simon paced the Hotshots with 15 points here, but he shot just 5/14 from
the field. James Yap returned to action from injury, but he, too, struggled,
missing all but two of his fourteen attempts. He scored only 7 markers as
Purefoods Star tumbled to 1-2.
Line of the
Game: Billy Mamaril - 12 points, 13
rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 6/11 FGs.
