#UAAP77Jrs January 21, 2015 Roundup: Eaglets Climb to 11-0!

The second round of the UAAP Season 77 Juniors Basketball Tournament heated up yesterday at the Blue Eagle Gym, with leaders Ateneo and NU continuing to roll and erstwhile title contender FEU-FERN getting waylaid by the Adamson Baby Falcons.

The Eaglets moved up to 11-0 even as the Baby Falcons caught a big fish by beating FEU-FERN.

The big winners were the Ateneo de Manila HS Blue Eagles, who beat the UST Tiger Cubs, 84-66, to register their eleventh win in a row. Twin brothers Mike and Matt Nieto continued to spearhead the Loyola quintet’s offensive, combining for 38 points on 15/22 FG shooting. Big Mike shot a perfect 9/9 from 2-point range while also grabbing 16 rebounds, while Matt added 7 assists and 2 steals. Grade 11 super guard Jolo Mendoza also played well, hitting 3 triples on his way to 15 markers. As a team, Ateneo shot 40% from rainbow territory, with Gian Mamuyac and Marc Salandanan each netting 2 treys. This was a tight game in the first half as Ateneo led 37-31 at the break, but coach Joe Silva’s wards had a breakthrough third period, outgunning their San Marcelino-based foes, 26-12, to blow the game open. This Saturday, the Eaglets next take on the skidding UPIS Junior Maroons, who lost to the NU Bullpups yesterday, 81-55.

Gian Mamuyac's game continues to grow in Season 77.

Ateneo will need Marc Salandanan's shooting in the Final Four.

Matt Nieto has been playing very efficient basketball for the Eaglets of late.

Adolph Salinas tries to score past the Ateneo D.

In that game, coach Jeff Napa’s boys led from the get-go as coach Allan Gregorio’s Dilimanians just couldn’t get anything going. UPIS shot just 25% from the field, while they also got outworked on the glass, 52-38. The defending champions led by as many as 36 points in this encounter as they continue to recover after a three-game losing slide bridging the first and second rounds. Wingman John Clemente paced the Bullpups with 20 points on 10/14 FG shooting, while Jordan Sta. Ana added 11 markers and 5 assists in under 20 minutes of play. National team player Mark Dyke wasn’t dominant on the offensive end, but he did collar 13 rebounds. On the other end, the Junior Maroons saw Allane Barles and Julius Barraquias each score 14 points, while Javi Gomez de Liano’s 11-point, 11-rebound double-double went down the drain.

Alfred Calma and the Bullpups blew out the Junior Maroons.

Speaking of down the drain, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws are seeing their season slowly slip away. The Green & Gold scored just 7 points in the entire first half against Adamson, while the Baby Falcons tallied 30 markers. FEU scored better in the second half, but by then the game was well beyond reach. The Baby Tams’ Big Four of Wendell Comboy, Brandrey Bienes, Marvin Lee, and Christian Fajarito combined for only 16 total points the entire game. FEU shot just 22% from the field, and they also got outrebounded, 55-48. Gerald Fernandez and Frederick Tungcab tossed in 18 and 14 points respectively to pace the Baby Falcons, who are tied for fourth place in the standings with their victims.

James Pasturan helped Adamson trip the FEU Baby Tams.

Both FEU-FERN and Adamson are one notch below the De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers, whose win against the UE Junior Warriors put them in solo third place with a 7-4 record. Coach Boris Aldeguer’s Alabang-based crew led from wire to wire in this match and eventually prevailed, 77-66. Noah Webb continued his dominant play with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Aljun Melecio dropped 13 markers, 7 boards, 5 assists, and 4 steals. UE, meanwhile, saw Paul Dagunan and Kent Contorro pair up for 39 markers in a losing cause.
