2015 #SEABAU16 Championship Days 4 Roundup

Southeast Asia’s three representatives to the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship have virtually been set after Indonesia beat Thailand on Day 4 of the 2015 SEABA U16 Championship. The Indons should join Malaysia and the Philippines, who had an emphatic win today against lowly Brunei.

At 6'4 and 6'5 respectively, Rhayyan Amsali (L) and Will Gozum (R) should serve as bright, tall prospects for the future of Philippine hoops.

INDONESIA over THAILAND, 71-53

- This was a nip-and-tuck affair for the first three quarters before the Indons broke the game open in the fourth period. Indonesia outscored the Thais, 27-14, in the final frame to erect an unsurmountable and practically book their ticket to the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship. Indonesia shot at a lower clip from the field and got outrebounded, but they made up for those deficits by forcing 33 Thai turnovers and shooting 26 turnovers. Agassi Goantara led the winners with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Andre Risqiano added 18 markers and 10 boards. On the other end, Poramed Intaranam and Siraphop Jamgrajang paced Thailand with 12 and 10 points respectively.

PHILIPPINES over BRUNEI, 112-31

- It was clear the Filipinos would win this game against such an inexperienced and overmatched opponent, but the home team didn’t really exploit their advantages too much. When the outcome was beyond doubt, coach Mike Oliver’s boys let the pressure up a little bit, which is something opposing Brunei coach Nomar Isla, himself a Filipino, surely appreciated. This win moved the Philippines closer to a sweep of the competition and formalized their qualification for the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship. Seven Pinoys scored in double-digits, led by RV Berjay’s 17-point, 14-rebound double-double. UPIS’s Juan Gomez de Liano also did well, adding 14 markers and 14 boards, while Rhayyan Amsali dropped 16 points and 3 steals off the bench. Tristan Lai was the only Brunei cager in double-figures with 13 points.
