#PBA2016 Commish Cup Roundup: February 20, 2016

Aldrech Ramos and Al Thornton led their respective ball clubs to separate victories yesterday.

Mahindra was the big winner in action from the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup today as they gave SMB a rude awakening even as the NLEX Road Warriors got back on the winning track by beating the hapless Star Hotshots.

MAHINDRA ENFORCERS over SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN, 102-96

The Mahindra Enforcers spoiled the 2016 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut of last conference’s champions, the San Miguel Beermen, 102-96, behind a big shooting performance from Aldrech Ramos on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.


Ramos exploded for 26 points, including an impressive 6-for-7 (85%) clip from beyond the three-point line to lead Mahindra, which is now 2-1 for the conference.




Point guard LA Revilla had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while import Augustus Gilchrist had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

KG Canaleta also had 15 points, including a string of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, while Karl Dehesa had 10 points and a team-high five assists.

SMB was led by import Tyler Wilkerson’s 29 points and 12 rebounds, while Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter tallied 17 and 14 markers respectively. Reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo defied team doctors’ orders to rest, playing 23 minutes and contributing 8 points.

NLEX ROAD WARRIORS over STAR HOTSHOTS, 106-99

The NLEX Road Warriors made some big plays down the stretch as they put away the struggling Star Hotshots, 106-99, with a big fourth quarter to get back on the winning track in the 2016 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

NLEX import Al Thornton scored 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace NLEX, while Garvo Lanete added 21 points, including three triples, in a big offensive showing.




Veteran center Asi Taulava had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Jonas Villanueva added 12 markers. Kevin Alas, too, reached double-figures with 10 points, including a crucial layup inside the final minute.

NLEX is now 2-1 for the conference while Star remained winless in three games.

Denzel Bowles paced the Hotshots with 30 points and 17 rebounds, while PJ Simon and Allein Maliksi added 21 and 20 markers respectively.
