#PBA2016 Govs’ Cup Roundup: July 31, 2016

Action continued in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup as Phoenix finally broke through with a win, while San Miguel Beer upended sister team Star.

PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS over GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER, 120-107
Box Scores. 

New Phoenix import Eugene Phelps exploded in his debut game to lift his Fuel Masters past the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 120-107, for their first win of the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.


Phelps scored 52 points alongside 16 rebounds and six assists in an impressive first impression for Phoenix.

Asian import Lee Kwan-Hee added 16 points, while John Wilson chipped in with 15 for the Fuel Masters.

Stanley Pringle and Michael Glover each scored 27 points, while Terrence Romeo added 20 markers for GlobalPort.

Eugene Phelps (PHX) - 52pts, 16rebs, 6asts, 18/30 FGs.
Michael Glover (GLO) - 27pts, 17rebs, 2asts, 2stls, 10/17 FGs.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over STAR HOTSHOTS, 109-100
Box Scores. 

The San Miguel Beermen bounced back from a defeat in their previous game as they crushed Star, 109-100, in the 2016 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Import Arizona Reid scored 34 points and dished out 11 assists, PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo posted 28 points and 13 rebounds while Alex Cabagnot added 21 markers for the Beermen, who won for the third time in four games.

Star, which was led by James Yap’s 20 points, fell to 1-3 for the current conference.

San Miguel got off to a big start thanks to Reid, who scored 13 points in the first quarter. Reid hit his first three three-pointers as he anchored the Beermen’s perimeter crew, which shot 5-for-13 (38-percent) from beyond the arc.

AZ Reid (SMB) - 34pts, 4rebs, 11asts, 5stls, 4 triples.
Marqus Blakely (STA) - 15pts, 21rebs, 1ast, 2stls, 2blks, 7/12 FGs.
