The new PBA season is just around the corner, and we will be ushering in a new campaign where the best and brightest of the Philippines’ hardwood heroes will take the stage again and battle for the ultimate basketball titles this side of the hoops world. Before we plunged into the action, let’s look at some exciting players to watch heading into the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup. In the previous post, I looked at the Top 5 Point Guards, but now let’s shift the focus a little bit to the Top 5 Shooting Guards heading into the 2016-2017 season.

The Top Five PBA Shooting Guards of the 2013-2014 Season

First off, congratulations to the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers for bagging not just the Governors’ Cup crown but also the elusive PBA Grand Slam. Of course, one of the main reasons the Mixers prevailed was superb shooting guard James Yap, who drilled in 29 points in the title-clinching fifth and final game of their series with the Rain or Shine Elasto-Painters. Yap, naturally, is one of the country’s best players, but was his production this past season enough to make him a top five two-guard in the league? Let’s see.

The Top Five PBA Shooting Guards Right Now (May 22, 2014)

Sweet-shooting two-guards were huge in the previous conference, what with PJ Simon and James Yap leading the Mixers in their title romp. Yap was even named Finals MVP! This is one spot where talent really does abound in the PBA, and in this post we’ll see who the top five SGs are at this point in the 2013-2014 season. Will Simon be among them? How about Yap? Maybe both of them?

The Top Five PBA Shooting Guards Right Now (March 2, 2014)

We all saw an awesome SG war in the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, with Jeff Chan finding his rhythm for Rain or Shine and James Yap and PJ Simon alternating for San Mig Coffee. It was a treat to watch for all die-hard hoop nuts, but, alas, Yap and Simon ended up with the trophy. Are all those three SGs, though, among the top five in the PBA? Well, let’s just say will be surprised by what you see.

5. PJ Simon (SMC) – 13.9ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.8apg, 28.2 EFF

- Though Simon is good enough to shoot from deep, he is the most atypical shooting guard on this list. He really has two bread-and-butter shots – that nifty 10-15-foot baseline J, and his patented midrange one-hander. Either one has been known to ignite spurts for the Mixers or, conversely, douse the flames from opposing teams’ runs. He is maybe the sneakiest scorer in the country today, which is  a big reason why he deserves a spot on this list.
