The new PBA season is just around the corner, and we will be ushering in a new campaign where the best and brightest of the Philippines’ hardwood heroes will take the stage again and battle for the ultimate basketball titles this side of the hoops world. Before we plunged into the action, let’s look at some exciting players to watch heading into the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup. In the previous post, I looked at the Top 5 Point Guards, but now let’s shift the focus a little bit to the Top 5 Shooting Guards heading into the 2016-2017 season.

Having great shooting guards has always been a hallmark of the PBA, but that has been slowly changing these past few years. With the influx of quality big men and the rise of splendid playmakers, the off guard spot has been relatively quiet. Icons like Mark Caguioa, Gary David, Dondon Hontiveros, and James Yap, who are in the twilight of their pro careers, have gradually given way, while guys like Terrence Romeo, Jeff Chan, and Marcio Lassiter have tried hard to take their own places in PBA lore. Let’s see where things currently stand this season in terms of the league’s best SGs.

The Top 5 Shooting Guards of #PBA2015

Terrence Romeo had a coming out party in the 2014-2015 PBA season, emerging as one of the league’s best all-around scorers. Was it enough to propel him to the top as the country’s best shooting guard, though? We’ll see as old-timers like James Yap, Gary David, and Mark Caguioa may have something to say about that, while young gun  Marcio Lassiter has also been turning a lot of heads.

The Top Five #PBA2015 Shooting Guards Right Now

Historically speaking, the PBA has always featured great shooting guards. I remember idolizing guys like Ato Agustin, Allan Caidic, Jojo Lastimosa, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Kenneth Duremdes in the 90s and then guys like Dondon Hontiveros, Mark Caguioa, Ren-Ren Ritualo, and James Yap inherited their mantles in the early-to-late 2000s. Lately, young up-and-comers like Marcio Lassiter and Terrence Romeo have hogged the limelight alongside veterans Jeff Chan, Gary David, and Ryan Reyes. As of today, however, who do you think are the top-performing two-guards in the pros?

The Top Five PBA Shooting Guards of the 2013-2014 Season

First off, congratulations to the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers for bagging not just the Governors’ Cup crown but also the elusive PBA Grand Slam. Of course, one of the main reasons the Mixers prevailed was superb shooting guard James Yap, who drilled in 29 points in the title-clinching fifth and final game of their series with the Rain or Shine Elasto-Painters. Yap, naturally, is one of the country’s best players, but was his production this past season enough to make him a top five two-guard in the league? Let’s see.

The Top Five PBA Shooting Guards Right Now (May 22, 2014)

Sweet-shooting two-guards were huge in the previous conference, what with PJ Simon and James Yap leading the Mixers in their title romp. Yap was even named Finals MVP! This is one spot where talent really does abound in the PBA, and in this post we’ll see who the top five SGs are at this point in the 2013-2014 season. Will Simon be among them? How about Yap? Maybe both of them?
