The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters fell into an early hole but came back to stun San Miguel, 98-94, to take Game 1 of their Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Maverick Ahanmisi posted 23 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while import Pierre Henderson-Niles shrugged off foul trouble to finish with 13 points – nine of those in the fourth quarter – alongside nine rebounds.

Jericho Cruz also scored 11 markers while Jeff Chan had 10, including a big three-pointer that gave the Elasto Painters the lead for good with 1:03 remaining in the game.

Rain or Shine trailed 33-15 in the first quarter after a sizzling hot start by Tyler Wilkerson and the Beermen. But they patiently chipped away, getting its first taste of the lead at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter.

Wilkerson scored 20 points in the first quarter and finished with 40 in the game. June Mar Fajardo also had a big game with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Tyler Wilkerson had another big game, but it wasn't enough for the Beermen to win.

Rain or Shine rallied in the second quarter. Lee, Ahanmisi, and Cruz combined for an 8-0 run that trimmed their deficit to nine, 39-30. After a basket from Wilkerson, Ahanmisi knocked down a three-pointer that made it a single-digit game again, 41-33.

Ahanmisi hit another triple at the 2:36 mark to cut San Miguel’s lead down to six, 46-40, but Fajardo ended the quarter with back-to-back baskets to give the Beermen a 50-40 advantage heading into the break.

But Rain or Shine came out of the break firing on all cylinders, scoring the first seven points of the third period.

Gabe Norwood completed a three-point play while Cruz scored twice as the team came back to within three, 50-47.

The game became close at that point on although another trey from Wilkerson gave SMB an eight-point lead, 80-72, early in the fourth.

Henderson-Niles made some big plays despite struggling with fouls, tying the game at 87-apiece in the final frame.

Fajardo continued to battle, giving the Beermen a 94-92 lead with 1:34 remaining.

But Chan made a huge three-pointer with 1:03 remaining, giving Rain or Shine a 95-94 advantage. The Elasto Painters then made a huge stop, forcing Wilkerson into a turnover.

Ahanmisi went three-of-four from the free throw line to seal the win.
