Behind a strong finish, Philippine Cup titlist Talk n Text got by Powerade and gained
virtual entry into the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.
Larry Fonacier and Jayson Castro banged in crucial three-pointers to spike the Texters’ surge from an 81-all count en route to the win that firmed up their hold of top spot in the leader board at 5-1. The Texters achieved all they wanted to do in the payoff period, reasserting their mastery of the same team they beat out for the All-Filipino championship.
Fonacier and Castro combined for four treys in all and Donnell Harvey contributed baskets from underneath in an 18-4 roll that opened a 99-85 spread for the Texters entering the last four minutes of the game.
The Tigers never recovered from there and dropped two rungs down to fifth place with a 3-3 win-loss slate.
Jarred Dillinger carried the cudgels for the Texters early on and finished with a game-high 28 points that went with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals against in 34 minutes of action. Fonacier wound up with 17, including a perfect 4-of-4 three-point shooting.
Gary David led Powerade’s rally from a 10-point halftime deficit but himself cooled down in the clutch. The Philippine Cup BPC winner still top scored for Powerade with 20 points though held down to two in the final canto.

ALASKA ACES over PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERTS, 93-88
Alaska coach Joel Banal was inciting his charges to match Petron Blaze's physicality and Adam Parada was quick to oblige. The seven-foot reinforcement knocked down Boosters guard Alex Cabagnot early in the third period and the Aces collectively repeated the statement for the rest of the half to come away with a win.
It was just one facet of Parada's game as he also spiked a 22-point, 15-rebound performance with a crucial offensive board in the endgame while the likes of Bonbon Custodio and LA Tenorio helped deliver the crucial plays that enabled the Aces to hold on for the win. It was the fourth victory in seven games overall for Alaska, enabling it to rebound big-time from a sorry 85-88 loss to Air21 their last time out and take solo fifth-running spot.
Nick Fazekas finished with 33 points and also had 19 rebounds for Petron, but he was not able to grab the one off a missed free throw by Custodio in the last 13 seconds of play. That enabled Tenorio to sink the charities off a Cabagnot foul that practically iced the game and sent Petron reeling to its second straight defeat and a 3-4 win-loss slate that tied it with idle Meralco for seventh, a notch below the last playoff spot.
Cyrus Baguio scored 19 points, but it was Custodio who drew special mention from Banal after he scored 17 points, which is just three short of his career-high notched when he was still a rookie for San Miguel Beer in 2008. Custodio scattered 11 of his points in the fourth quarter, including four straight following Parada's free throws that gave Alaska an 89-84 lead. He also wound up with a team-high 5 assists against 3 turnovers.
