Speeding Bullets:
- The UPIS Junior Maroons are in for another tough season, but it seems they won’t be going down without a fight. They gave the Mapua Red Robins all they could handle, and then some, in a double-overtime thriller. Diego Dario led the way with 18 points, while versatile forward Raymart Sablan continued to impress with 12 points on top of 16 boards and 2 blocks. Mapua leaned on the herculean efforts of Jeric Diego, who finished with 21 markers and a whopping 28 rebounds.
- Andre Paras was awesome in last season’s NCAA juniors finals, and it seems he’ll be the main man for the LSGH Greenies in this year’s campaign. Paras dropped a double-double worthy of his name, 22 points and 15 rebounds, against the hapless Junior Altas to lead LSGH to its first win. Andre’s younger bro, Kobe, who played for the RP U13 team last summer and just transferred from Ateneo, also played, finishing with 2 points. Shaquille Imperial led Perpetual with 26 points.
- The Growling Tigers notched their first win thanks to the efforts of Aljohn Mariano and Karim Abdul, both of whom finished with 14 markers. Mariano looks to be one of the main offensive options of coach Pido Jarencio this coming season, aside from his two Jerics and Abdul. As a sidenote, it’s been confirmed that Chris Camus will no longer play for UST.
- RR Garcia and Arvie Bringas scored 11 apiece in leading the FEU Tamaraws past the Lyceum Pirates for their own first victory. Bringas almost produced a double-double with 9 caroms to go along with his 11 markers. It seems he’ll be the main man in the paint for FEU this coming season, despite coach Bert Flores still having the services of veterans Mark Bringas and Russel Escoto. Curiously, forward Carl Bryan Cruz isn’t playing, though, as far as I know, he’s still eligible. Oh, and Andrei Mendoza of Lyceum will probably get banned from the Filoil tourney for punching Terrence Romeo.
- The Red Warriors let the Cardinals back in the game and had to go through 5 extra minutes before carving up an 86-82 win. Roi Sumang put up Chris paul-ish numbers – 21 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals – to lead UE’s charge. Former Arhcher Gab Banal, meanwhile, was the tower of power underneath for Mapua, netting 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in his debut for the red and gold.
