Another day, another disappointment, as the 2012 Jones Cup online coverage continues to flounder. No box scores or images are readily available. Unless, I guess, you’re in Taiwan.
So here, again, is a re-post of another great recap by Mikkel Bolante of InterAKTV.com.
The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team cruised to it second victory in as many games as it routed a young Chinese Taipei B squad that just couldn’t keep up, 99-68, in the 34th William Jones Cup in Taiwan.
Former San Beda star Garvo Lanete, the second youngest player on the squad, led the team with 20 points while four other Filipinos finished in double figures as they blew out the very young Guang Hua squad, whose oldest player was Lo Yu-Chun, who is 24 years old.
The game started close, with the score knotted at 13-apiece after the first six minutes of the game, but Gary David sparked a big 13-1 run for the Philippines as they grabbed a double-digit lead and never looked back.
The Philippines led by 23 points at the half, before pushing it to as high as 41 on a Lanete basket that made it 98-57 with a little over three minutes to play.
Lanete proved that he could score in bunches, scoring seven points in an 11-4 run to end the second quarter and all of a 7-0 blast in the fourth that spanned about one minute.
Larry Fonacier, Sonny Thoss, Marcus Douthit and LA Tenorio all scored in double-figures for SMART-Gilas.
The team gets a day off Sunday before resuming its campaign against South Korea on Tuesday.
Gilas 2.0 hurdled its first big test in a depleted Jordan squad yesterday and then blew out a clearly overmatched young Taiwan team today. The Anyang KGC club from South Korea will be tough, even if, technically, it’s not a national team. They’re the champs of the Korean Basketball League (KBL) and have four NT mainstays on that championship roster – Oh Sek-Eun, Yang Hee-Jong, Park Chan-Hee, and Kim Tae-Sul. Based on lineup posted by Chris Wang of Taiwan Hoops, however, crack PG Park isn’t around, so they are definitely not at full strength.
This promises to be a close one, since imports Juan Pattillo and Garrett Stutz will backstop Anyang, but Gilas’s talent should still be enough to see them through. It’ll be a tight third win for Gilas I think.

Other Day 2 Scores:
Anyang KGC (SK) over Lebanon, 94-78
- This is proof that the Koreans are a big threat as they beat a practically intact Lebanese squad with naturalized center Jarrid Famous (yes, the former Meralco Bolts import). If Fadi El-Khatib were around, however, this would be a different story.
Iran over Japan, 71-59
- Samad Nikkhah Bahrami reportedly scored 32 points here as the Iranians continued their mastery of the Japanese. Japan could’ve used former NBA hopeful Takuya Kawamura here.
USA over Taiwan A, 100-77
- Taiwan is suffering a spate of injuries, most notably to their best big man, Tseng Wen-Ting. Either he’s really in bad shape, or they’re just saving him for the latter games.
