The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 17, 2013 Roundup

San Beda rebounded from its opening day loss, Ateneo gained win #2, and the SWU Cobras continued to flounder in day 2 of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. The Letran Squires and the FEU Lady Tamaraws also opened their respective divisions’ schedules with contrasting victories.

Roundup:

In the first game, big man Ivan Villanueva was dominant with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 2 blocks to lead the Letran Squires over fellow Dominican-run school, UST, 70-67. Backstopping the burly Villanueva was Gerdy Alacre’s 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Tiger Cubs, who are parading an almost completely new roster this season were led by Ice Dandan’s 16 markers.

for the Squires this season.

The second game saw the Lady Tams defeat the UST Tigresses, 54-45. The FEU girls used a big third quarter to frustrate UST, who leaned on the combined 23 points of Janine Ong and Maica Cortes. FEU, meanwhile, was led by Camille Sambile’s 14 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.

In the third game, the San Beda Red Lions rebounded from their opening day defeat by destroying the JRU Heavy Bombers, 67-55. Rome Dela Rosa and Ola Adeogun paired up for 30 points to spearhead the Lions’ attack, with Adeogun also collaring 12 rebounds. Former Blue Eagle Arthur Dela Cruz also did well, grabbing 14 rebounds in 28 minutes. Paolo Pontejos led the Bombers with 18 points, but he shot just 5-of-16 from the field and turned the ball over four times.

The fourth game featured a significantly deeper UE squad beating the SWU Cobras, 81-62. Roi Sumang was a whirlwind with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Lord Casajeros rifled in 4 triples to finish with 14 points, Adrian Santos was a picture of efficiency with 16 points on 7-of-9 FG shooting, and JM Noble returned to action with 10 markers to underscore the improvement of the Reds, who are now mentored by Boysie Zamar. Some young guns to watch in the team are former Staglet Gino Jumao-as and RP-Youth shooter Mario Bonleon. Monbert Arong and Fabrice Siewe led the Cobras with a combined 23 markers.

The last match of the day saw Ateneo get its second win at the expense of the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 75-70. Kiefer Ravena was king today with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal, while newcomer Chris Newsome impressed again, registering 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. On the other end of the floor, Bradwyn Guinto lorded over the shaded lane with a wicked double-double – 15 points and 19 rebounds. The Stags outrebounded the Eagles, 53-43, but coach Bo Perasol’s wards made up for it with better playmaking (20 assists against just 10 for Baste) and defense (forcing 24 SSC turnovers).

Undersized Vince Tolentino should see a lot
of action for a depleted Ateneo frontline.

In the meantime, the UAAP Board upheld its insanity, approving the #NewUAAPRule despite the twisted mindset behind it and the resulting public outcry. I will be writing about this when the Board releases its implementing rules and guidelines, which will probably spark even more furor. I wouldn’t mind having someone file a Temporary Restraining Order (if applicable) against it, though.
