NU
remained undefeated after keeping FEU at bay in today’s edition of the 2013
Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. SWU and SSC were
also big winners today as both teams got their second wins in contrasting
fashions.

In
the first game, the San Beda Red Cubs started their Filoil campaign on a bright
note by defeating NCAA rivals La Salle Greenhills, 70-65. This game featured a
plethora of former RP-Youth players take center stage. Foremost among these was
San Beda’s Rev Diputado, who scored 15 points while handing out 4 assists and
getting 3 steals. He was ably supported by Javee Mocon’s 12 points and 10
boards, while another former RP-Youth campaigner, Arvin Tolentino, registered
10 markers and 5 rebounds. LSGH was led by two former RP-Youth players, too –
Rashleigh Prince Rivero (transferee from NU) and Kobe Paras (who spent one year
in the Ateneo HS). Rivero scored 23 points and hauled down 13 boards, while
Paras, the younger bro of UP’s Andrei Paras, added a dozen markers. The
Greenies fell to 0-1.

The
second game saw the De La Salle Lady Archers hand the Lyceum of the Philippines
Lady Pirates their second loss, 59-53. Ara Abaca led DLSU with 14 points and 19
rebounds, while Cass Santos had 7 points and 11 boards. Lyceum’s Chack Cabinbin
led all scorers with 30 points and 14 rebounds, but it was all for naught.

In the third game, the Southwestern University Cobras nailed
their second W at the expense of the EAC Generals, 80-75. Landry Sanjo and Adam
Mohammed paired up for 39 points, with Sanjo also recording 16 rebounds and 5
rejections. The Cobras utilized a strong finish in the fourth period to thwart
the Generals’ efforts, highlighted by Mohammed’s big triple with a little more
than a minute left for a 76-71 lead. EAC enjoyed great contributions from
Francis Munsayac and Jan Jamon, both of whom combined for 50 markers.

The
fourth game featured San Sebastian’s new dynamic duo, Jaymark Perez and Leo De
Vera, finally explode and lead the Stags to a landmark overtime win over the
vastly improved UE Red Warriors, 89-87. Perez, dubbed by coliseum barker Rolly
Manlapaz as “The New Beast,” did unload a beastly line – 20 points, 10
rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, while De Vera shot the lights out,
hitting 5 triples to end up with 20 points on top of 8 boards and 6 steals. Jovit
Dela Cruz completed the three-headed monster attack for coach Topex Robinson
with 19 markers and 12 caroms. On the other end, UE was led by Roi Sumang and
new big man Charles Mammie, who scored 23 points each. Sumang also had 9
assists and 3 steals, while Mammie collared 16 rebounds in their second defeat
of the tourney. The Stags, meanwhile, hiked their slate to 2 wins against 2
losses.

The
last match of the day resulted in NU’s fourth win in as many games. This time
their victims were their UAAP rivals, FEU, 67-64. Big man Alfred Aroga was a
tower of power, scoring 20 points to go along with 11 boards. This he did
despite the return of Emmanuel Mbe to action. Apparently, Mbe has been cleared
to play in the summer league and perhaps we can assume this means he is also
eligible to play out one final season in the UAAP. Ray Parks, who released a
statement confirming that this coming collegiate season would be his last, scored
18 points, while another RP-Youth standout, Jay-J Alejandro, netted 10 markers
to backstop Aroga. The Green & Gold, meanwhile, were led by the backcourt
pair of Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia. Romeo scored 25 points and had 7
rebounds, while Garcia, who is an active member of the Gilas PIilipinas cadet
pool, scattered 14 markers and also 7 boards. Coach Nash Racela’s Tamaraws absorbed
their second loss against just one win so far.
