The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 26, 2013 Roundup

Letran broke through the win column, La Salle powered through Baste, and the Ateneans won over Lyceum in today’s edition of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. The big question for the Blue Eagles, however, is this – what price did they pay for win #7?

In the first game, the UST Tiger Cubs, behind the 19 points, SEVEN STEALS, and 4 assists of pint-sized guard Tristan Laman, handed the UPIS Junior Maroons their second loss in as many games, 79-75. It was a close contest between two teams that, so far, haven’t been tagged as title contenders in the upcoming UAAP Season 76 Juniors wars. Big men Ice Dandan and Ryan Syyap paired up for 15 points and 20 rebounds, while Pao Corre finished with 13 points (but 7 turnovers) to backstop Laman’s efforts. Not surprisingly, UPIS was led by Diego Dario’s 32 markers and Raymart Sablan’s 10 points and 10 boards.

The second game saw the FEU Lady Tamaraws go up to 2-0 at the expense of the debuting CSB Lady Blazers, 47-39. Camille Sambile had a monster line – 14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 steals – to lead the Lady Tams, while Grace Dadal had 13 points and 4 rebounds for CSB. Sambile was supported by Vangie Soriano and April Siat, who had 12 and 10 points respectively.

In the third game, rookie sensation Rey Nambatac had another strong showing with 16 points and 4 steals as the Letran Knights won their first game by trouncing the SWU Cobras, 78-68. Nambatac still showed some areas for improvement – he shot 5-of-14 from the floor and turned the ball over four times – but by and large it’s clear he will be one of the main guns of Letran this season. Like Nambatac, homegrown Letranistas McJour Luib and Mark Cruz also shone through with 13 and 11 markers respectively. The Cobras, meanwhile, were paced by the combined 33 points of Landry Sanjo and Monbert Arong. This is SWU’s fifth defeat in 6 games.

The fourth game featured another blowout in favor of the fierce-looking De La Salle Green Archers. Coach Gee Abanilla is clearly still experimenting with on-court combinations, but even this early the depth of his roster has become apparent. Led by Jeron Teng’s 17 points, the Taft quintet repulsed the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 90-74. La Salle turned a tight contest into a rout, outscoring the Stags 32-20, in the second period and never looked back. Gabby Reyes, Arnold Van Opstal, and Thomas Torres – all products of La Salle high schools – backstopped Teng by scoring 13, 11, and 10 markers respectively. Big men Norbert Torres and Jason Perkins both struggled from the field, but they did collectively haul down 29 boards. The Stags featured four players in double-digits, led by the 14 points of Jovit Dela Cruz. Baste forced more Green & White turnovers, but they weren’t able to capitalize because they shot just 36% from the floor and were grossly outrebounded, 58-37.

The last match of the day resulted in win #7 for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. The Loyolans handed Lyceum its second straight defeat, 84-64, with Kiefer Ravena continuing to weave his own brand of magic. The Phenom scored 21 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists as the Eagles prepare to fly to the States for their annual training trip. The backcourt duo of Nico Elorde and Juami Tiongson also did well by chipping in a combined output of 28 points including 5 triples. This was a costly win for coach Bo Perasol’s wards, however, as Von Pessumal severely injured a finger on his shooting hand early in the second period, and Vince Tolentino went down after a nasty hit from Lyceum’s Andrei Mendoza. With Pessumal out and Tolentino playing hurt, Ateneo had to gut it out with practically just 8 guys. By game’s end, only Frank Golla was the legit big man left standing – even the 5’9” Earl Murphy had to pinch hit at the power forward spot! Only Dexter Zamora scored in double-figures for the Pirates with 10 points. The next game for the Blues is on June 1 against their archrivals, the DLSU Green Archers.
