Roundup:

In the first game, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws blew out the UPHSD Junior Altas, 91-51, thanks to a superb shooting game from Js Domingo. Js, one half of the Baby Tams’ Domingo twins (the other one is Jj), drilled 9 of his 14 field goals to finish with a team-high 25 points. Big man Richard Escoto, younger brother of Russel Escoto from the FEU seniors, also did well with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block, while Marvin Lee and Wendelino Comboy paired up for 28 markers. Shaq Imperial led the Junior Altas, who dropped to 0-2, with a game-high 25 points.

The second game saw the UST Tigresses’ most imposing player, Maica Cortes, seem to have actually become even more imposing! Cortes dropped 17 points, hauled down TWENTY ONE REBOUNDS, and blocked 2 shots as UST bounced back from its first loss with a win over the UP Lady Maroons, 70-65. Lore Rivera also had a double-double for UST with 19 markers and 11 boards, while Bea Daez’s 23 points paced UP, which sank to 0-2.

WHOA. Maica Cortes is more than
most anyone can handle.

In the third game, the Arellano University Chiefs remained unscathed, beating the CSB Blazers, 63-50, in convincing fashion. Arellano used a strong fourth quarter to turn a tight match into a rout. They leaned on Nard Pinto’s 17 markers, while Prince Caperal turned in 10 points and 11 rebounds. Nobody finished with more than 8 points for the Blazers, who received their second defeat in as many games. Mark Romero and Fonso Saavedra each registered 8 markers for CSB.

The fourth game featured two teams that lost their respective opening games, but it was FEU that made the most of its chances and ended up with the W, 88-81, over the UPHSD Altas. Terrence Romeo rifled in four triples for the Green & Gold, finishing with 21 points in just 18 minutes of action. Mike Tolomia also performed well with 13 markers, 5 boards, and 5 dimes, while Mark Belo and RR Garcia scored 12 and 11 points respectively. FEU withstood the 32-point explosion of Nosa Omorogbe, who filled the stat-sheet with 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. The Altas actually forced 8 more FEU turnovers, but they were severely outworked on the boards, 39-27, and outplayed in terms of ball distribution, giving up 24 Tamaraw assists.

The last match of the day resulted in NU’s third win in a row, this time over the winless JRU Heavy Bombers, 71-60. Coach Eric Altamirano utilized a balanced attack to deflate the Bombers’ charge, with Ray Parks, Troy Rosario, Alfred Aroga, and Jay-J Alejandro all scoring 12 points or more. Alejandro, in particular, was quite impressive with 3 triples, 3 assists, and ZERO turnovers, and the former scoring leader of the RP-Youth squad should be a vital cog in the title aspirations of NU in Season 76. On the other end, pint-sized Pao Pontejos hit three of his own triples and finished with 15 points to lead the Bombers. No other player scored more than 9 points for the struggling Mandaluyong-based squad.

Pao Pontejos may be small, but he sure packs a lot of punch.

Alfred Aroga should be a double-double
threat every game for NU.

Robin Roño looks to have a bigger role in
the playmaking for the Bulldogs.
