The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: June 3, 2013 Roundup

Playoff action in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup revved up in both the Juniors and Seniors divisions. San Beda and NU disposed of their assignments in the Juniors set, while UST and UE secured tickets to the semifinals in the Seniors wars.

In the day’s opener, the National University Bullpups survived a scare against the top team of Group B – the San Sebastian Staglets, 80-75. Unsurprisingly, Hubert Cani led NU with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, while John Cauilan anchored the interior with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Both Lorenzo Battad and Mark Dyke also chipped in significant contributions. Battad had a dozen markers, while Dyke collared 15 boards and had 2 blocks. On the other end, four Staglets scored 15 points or better, led by Lorenzo Navarro’s 19 markers. Navarro hit 4 triples, dished out 6 assists, and had 2 thefts. Alfren Gayosa, Michael Calisaan, and Ryan Costelo each registered 15 points in the loss.

Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College upset their more fancied foes while the UE Red Warriors avoided what could have been a humiliating loss in yesterday’s action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s opener, the Mapua/Malayan Red Robins earned their third win of the tournament at the expense of the UPHSD Junior Altas, 85-74. Noah Lugo led the Robins with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Ronnel Villaseñor, Dainiel Aguirre, and David Velvez each scored a dozen markers as Mapua remained within striking distance of the Juniors division’s top teams. Mark Miranda and Shaq Imperial each netted 16 points as Perpetual dropped its fifth straight game.

FEU finally notched a win even as both Arellano and NU remained undefeated in today’s edition of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. Also, check out the Baby Tams’ rout of the Junior Altas and the Tigresses’ hulking tower of power – Maica Cortes!!!

In the first game, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws blew out the UPHSD Junior Altas, 91-51, thanks to a superb shooting game from Js Domingo. Js, one half of the Baby Tams’ Domingo twins (the other one is Jj), drilled 9 of his 14 field goals to finish with a team-high 25 points. Big man Richard Escoto, younger brother of Russel Escoto from the FEU seniors, also did well with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block, while Marvin Lee and Wendelino Comboy paired up for 28 markers. Shaq Imperial led the Junior Altas, who dropped to 0-2, with a game-high 25 points.

Ateneo rebounded with a win over Letran, San Sebastian handed SWU another defeat, while the Fighting Maroons absorbed loss #2 at the hands of Arellano in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup yesterday at the San Juan Arena.

The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 18, 2013 Roundup

Ateneo and San Beda continued to gain momentum even as the UP Fighting Maroons lost in their debut game and the Arellano Chiefs registered win #1 on day 3 of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. The loaded NU Bullpups and the Adamson Lady Falcons also won their respective assignments in their own divisions earlier today.

Speeding Bullets: 

- The Jr. Archers are looking at really good chances to make the Final 4 this season. They might even be the odds-on favorite to win the UAAP Jrs. plum.
- The Tiger Cubs, despite playing with consistent inconsistency, surprised the Baby Falcons. Big man Neil Ilarde could be a nice pick-up in the Seniors ranks.
- UE's rookies are quite unheralded, but they're bound to make some noise this season. In particular, guys like Roy Sumang, BJ Zosa, Nike Montavio, Chris Javier and Nico Montelibano could make immediate contributions.
- If anything, NU has shown that it's really a one-man team. Who will take the cudgels if or when the teams unravel the puzzle that is Bobby Ray Parks?
- DLSU remains extremely dangerous, what with all their positions going at least two-deep. Norbert Torres finally had a great showing while Sam Marata hit some big shots. Almond Vosotros is slowly morphing into that possible I'll-be-consistently-good-guy the Archers will definitely need.
