It was a day for some middling teams to gain some
ground. Led by Jericho Cruz, the Adamson Soaring Falcons trounced the JRU Heavy
Bombers for their second win in four games. Afterwards, the CSB Blazers and UE
Red Warriors struggled through atrocious shooting before pulling out wins of
their own against Perpetual Help and Letran respectively.

Roundup:
In the day’s first game, the De La Salle-Zobel
Junior Archers made up for their rebounding disadvantage by shooting better
from the field and distributing the ball more effectively to beat the Perpetual
Help Junior Altas, 88-79. Palarong Pambansa campaigner Renzo Subido led Zobel
with 23 points on the strength of 4 triples while also adding 4 rebounds, 4
assists, and 3 steals. He was backstopped by big man Jose Maldinger and wingman
Quinito Banzon, who scored 21 and 18 markers respectively. Gerald Udal was the
lone bright spot for the Junior Altas with 23 points and a herculean 20
rebounds. This was Zobel’s maiden win and Perpetual’s fourth straight loss.
Gio Abanilla, Renzo Subido, and Quinito Banzon are all expected to play vital roles for Zobel this coming season. |
The second game saw the Centro Escolar University
Lady Scorpions use a blistering fourth quarter run to hand the NU Lady Bulldogs
their first defeat of the tournament, 87-67. Ybur Mendoza and Apet Pontejos
paired up for 53 points for the Lady Scorpions, who climbed to 3-1 in the
standings. Center Shaddy Ogunsemuyem also did well with a dozen markers and 20
boards, while Micah Figuracion contributed 12 points for CEU. Shelly Gupilan,
Afril Bernardino, and Sam Paig all scored in double-figures to lead NU, which
fell to 2-1.

In the third game, the Adamson Soaring Falcons
leaned on their new leader, Jericho Cruz, to scrape past the JRU Heavy Bombers,
69-65. Cruz, now tagged as the new face of the Falcons, connected on all three
of his rainbow attempts to finish with 24 points. The big man duo of Rodney
Brondial and Ingrid Sewa also did well with a combined output of 24 points and
19 boards. The two Phillips, Paniamogan and Mabulac, spearheaded JRU’s upset
hopes with 18 and 14 markers respectively. Coach Leo Austria’s wards now tote a
2-2 win-loss card, while JRU fell to 1-4.

The fourth game featured a close encounter between
College of St. Benilde and Perpetual Help, with the Blazers coming out on top
in the end, 78-74. This was thanks to the sublime showing of Paolo Taha, who
registered 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. He was ably supported by Mark
Romero and JR Ongtengco, who finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.
Ongtengco also hauled down 9 rebounds while blocking 4 shots. Nosa Omorogbe and
Justine Allano led the way for the Altas with 16 and 14 markers respectively,
but they lost their fourth game in five tries. Benilde, meanwhile, hiked its
slate to 2 wins and 3 defeats.

The final match of the day resulted in UE upending
Letran, 76-64. Consequently, the Red Warriors earned their third victory of the
tourney, while the Knights sank to 3-3. Chris Javier was the focal point of
UE’s offense with 18 points while also grabbing 9 rebounds. New recruit Charles
Mammie also accounted well for himself with 11 markers and 10 boards, while Roi
Sumang and Adrian Santos chipped in 10 markers each for coach Boysie Zamar’s
Reds. The Knights struggled mightily in this one, with star big man Raymond
Almazan coming up with just 7 points – all from the free throw line. Almazan
shot 0-for-7 from the field, though he got 8 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. Bench
players Ford Ruaya and Fidel Castro (really? That name?) led Letran with a
combined 24 markers.
