Norbert Torres and the Archers remained unbeaten
in the 2013 Filoil tourney.

Roundup:
In the day’s first game, the San Sebastian Staglets moved up to 3 wins and 1 loss after beating NCAA rivals Mapua/Malayan, 83-64. Five Baste boys scored in double-figures, led by Lorenzo Navarro’s 18 markers – all from three-point land. Rhanzel Yong and Jazneth Causon each scored a dozen points, while Cholo Loor and Alfren Gayosa netted 11 and 10 respectively. Mapua’s scoring machine, Noah Lugo, pace the Red Robins with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals, while lefty playmaker Kevin Cabural added 16 markers on 8-of-10 FG shooting. Mapua’s win-loss slate is now 2-2.

The second game saw the Ateneo Blue Eaglets continue their unbeaten run in the Filoil tourney, escaping maybe their top rival in the UAAP this season – the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws, 77-74. Despite losing big man Mike Nieto to an ankle sprain early on, the Eaglets managed to win thanks to tenacious defense. Ateneo forced 21 FEU turnovers while they coughed the ball up just 10 times. This also made up for the HUGE deficiency in rebounds, as the Baby Tams outclassed their Loyola counterparts on the boards, 58-30. Thirdy Ravena had a monster scoring game. The incoming fourth year swingman scattered 33 points on top of 5 rebounds and 2 assists. He was backed up by super sophomore Jolo Mendoza, who tossed in 17 markers. Fourth year center Jme Escaler also did well, contributing 11 markers and 8 boards. FEU, meanwhile, was led by big man Brandrey Bienes’s 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 rejections, while sweet shooter JJ Domingo finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. FEU sank to 2 wins against 2 defeats.

In the third game, the Letran upended Lyceum, 77-72, for its fourth win in seven games. The Knights played without Raymond Almazan, but they still managed to outrebound the Pirates, 54-50. Former Squires Rey Nambatac and McJour Luib led the way for the Muralla five with 16 and 11 points respectively. They also grabbed 8 rebounds each. Dexter Zamora led Lyceum with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, but he committed 6 turnovers. Vergel Evangelista and Tirso Lesmoras scored 13 and 10 markers respectively in the Pirates’ losing cause. This is now Lyceum’s fourth loss in as many starts.

Rey Nambatac led Letran to win #4.

The fourth game featured a blowout as the DLSU Green Archers just outclassed the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 91-63. New big man Jason Perkins continued to seize every La Sallian’s imagination, coming up with 20 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. Jeron Teng, Norbert Torres, and Oda Tampus all finished scoring in twin digits, too. DLSU’s defense stifled the incursions of EAC, as the latter shot just 29% from the field while the former converted on 49% of their attempts. Noube Happi and Jan Jamon each chipped in 14 markers for the hapless Generals, who remain winless after 5 outings.

The final match of the day resulted in UP providing token resistance as the NU Bulldogs raced to their eighth straight Filoil win, 71-52. Ray Parks and Alfred Aroga continued their two-pronged domination, with Parks scoring 15 points (10 from the line) and Aroga ending up with 14 markers, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Starting PF Jeoff Javillonar also did well with a dozen points on 4-of-6 FG shooting. The bottom-feeding Fighting Maroons were led by Raul Soyud and Tata Marata, who contributed 14 and 12 points respectively. Two bright spots for UP, however, were rookies Kyles Lao and Paul Desiderio, who paired up for 10 points in a combined playing time of just 23 minutes.
