The 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 28, 2014 Roundup

Action in the 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup this past Monday with big wins coming from Lyceum and CEU, and the RP-Youth team finally making its debut!

The 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup continues to heat up!

Roundup:

In the day’s opener, the Mapua/Malayan Junior Cardinals bounced back from an opening day loss and turned back the UPIS Junior Maroons, 85-54. David Velvez erupted for 20 points on 8/11 FG shooting on top of 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals to lead MIT. The trio of Jasper Salengga, Dainiel Aguirre, and Lorence Victoria effectively backed him up with a combined 35 markers and 25 boards. Allane Barles led the way for UPIS with 19 points in 22 minutes. The Junior Maroons, however, fell to 1-2 in the team standings.

The second game saw the Letran Squires storm back in the second half to scrape by the JRU Light Bombers, 59-58. Letran had a slow start and trailed at the half before rallying in the third quarter to tie the game and eventually outlast the Bombers in the endgame. Jerk Balanza was terrific for the Squires, scoring 17 points on 7/12 FG shooting while also grabbing 6 rebounds, handing out 3 assists, and getting 1 steal. Kylle Dungan backed him up with 10 markers and 4 boards. On the other end, JRU was paced by the dynamic duo of Darius Estrealla and Andrei Dada. Estrella racked up a sublime double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Dada scored 15 markers on the strength of 4 treys.

The UST Growling Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals with their fifth win of the tournament even as the FEU Tamaraws and UP Fighting Maroons each won their respective games in action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s opener, the San Beda Red Cubs remained unbeaten in Group A action. The Rizal-based cagers beat their counterparts from Muralla, the Letran Squires, 95-73. San Beda had a red-hot start, scoring 33 points in the first period alone to wrest control early, and they would never give Letran a chance. Former RP-Youth playmaker Radge Tongco led the Cubs with 19 points on 7-of-9 FG shooting, while former San Benildo star Javee Mocon drilled in 18 markers on top of 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. The frontline trio of Ivan Villanueva, Yves Sazon, and Gerdy Alacre spearheaded Letran with a combined 55 points. The Squires fell to 3 wins and 2 losses, and have been effectively eliminated from advancing to the Juniors semifinals.

With contrasting wins, both San Beda College and De La Salle University secured quarterfinal berths while the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals notched only their second win in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s opener, the La Salle Green Hills Junior Blazers earned win #2 by dealing the UPIS Junior Maroons their fifth loss in as many games, 74-70. Ricci Rivero led LSGH with 21 points on 10-of-18 FG shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. He was backstopped by Alexis Barrera’s 14 points and 5 boards. Fresh from their championship-clinching stint in Bangkok, Thailand, Team Pilipinas stalwarts Kobe Paras and Rashleigh Prince Rivero showed up to play, but they didn’t need to be dominant. They paired up for 10 points and 18 rebounds. UPIS was led by Diego Dario’s 20 markers, while Freddy Pajarillaga and Juan Gomez de Llano (a freshman from the Ateneo Grade School) each chipped in 13.

The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: May 22, 2013 Roundup

Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College upset their more fancied foes while the UE Red Warriors avoided what could have been a humiliating loss in yesterday’s action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s opener, the Mapua/Malayan Red Robins earned their third win of the tournament at the expense of the UPHSD Junior Altas, 85-74. Noah Lugo led the Robins with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Ronnel Villaseñor, Dainiel Aguirre, and David Velvez each scored a dozen markers as Mapua remained within striking distance of the Juniors division’s top teams. Mark Miranda and Shaq Imperial each netted 16 points as Perpetual dropped its fifth straight game.

National University and De La Salle both kept their records unblemished, while Letran got back above .500 at the expense of Lyceum in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s first game, the San Sebastian Staglets moved up to 3 wins and 1 loss after beating NCAA rivals Mapua/Malayan, 83-64. Five Baste boys scored in double-figures, led by Lorenzo Navarro’s 18 markers – all from three-point land. Rhanzel Yong and Jazneth Causon each scored a dozen points, while Cholo Loor and Alfren Gayosa netted 11 and 10 respectively. Mapua’s scoring machine, Noah Lugo, pace the Red Robins with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals, while lefty playmaker Kevin Cabural added 16 markers on 8-of-10 FG shooting. Mapua’s win-loss slate is now 2-2.

The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 18, 2013 Roundup

Ateneo and San Beda continued to gain momentum even as the UP Fighting Maroons lost in their debut game and the Arellano Chiefs registered win #1 on day 3 of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. The loaded NU Bullpups and the Adamson Lady Falcons also won their respective assignments in their own divisions earlier today.
