With
contrasting wins, both San Beda College and De La Salle University secured
quarterfinal berths while the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals notched only
their second win in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.
Roundup:
In the day’s opener,
the La Salle Green Hills Junior Blazers earned win #2 by dealing the UPIS
Junior Maroons their fifth loss in as many games, 74-70. Ricci Rivero led LSGH
with 21 points on 10-of-18 FG shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds and
blocking 2 shots. He was backstopped by Alexis Barrera’s 14 points and 5
boards. Fresh from their championship-clinching stint in Bangkok, Thailand,
Team Pilipinas stalwarts Kobe Paras and Rashleigh Prince Rivero showed up to
play, but they didn’t need to be dominant. They paired up for 10 points and 18
rebounds. UPIS was led by Diego Dario’s 20 markers, while Freddy Pajarillaga
and Juan Gomez de Llano (a freshman from the Ateneo Grade School) each chipped
in 13.
Watch out for this kid -- Kobe Paras. He's going to be a pillar of Philippine ball in the not-so-distant future. |
The second
game saw the Adamson Lady Falcons move up to 2-1 at the expense of the CSB Lady
Blazers, 72-64. Jinkie Balasta connected on 5 triples to score 15 points for
Adamson, while Zhalyn Mateo and Joy Cochico scored 12 and 10 markers
respectively. Big lady Janille De Castro also did well with 12 rebounds and 2
rejections to solidify the Adamson interior. Jen Mayol and Grace Dadal
spearheaded CSB’s losing effort with 17 and 15 points respectively.

In the third
game, the San Beda Red Lions saw another potential star rise to the occasion in
their win over the CSB Blazers, 74-58. Former Red Cub Francis Abarcar netted 22
points on 6-of-9 FG shooting including making all three attempts from rainbow
country. He was ably supported by another former Red Cub, Baser Amer, who
dropped 15 markers, 6 boards, 3 dimes, and 1 swipe for SBC, which now totes a
5-2 win-loss card. Ryusei Koga and Ola Adeogun added 10 points apiece. Adeogun
also hauled down a dozen ribbies and blocked 3 shots. The Blazers, who fell to
3 wins and 5 losses, were led by Mark Romero’s 19 points, while JR Ongtengco
accounted well for himself with 10 markers and 9 boards.

markers. Munsayac hit 10-of-12 freebies, while Jamon hit 2 of 3 triples. John
Monteclaro and Igee King rounded out the double-digit scoring for EAC with 13
and 12 points respectively. On the other end, Shane Ko shone for Lyceum with 15
points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds. John Azores had 13 points and 8 boards, while
Shaq Alanes finished with a dozen markers as Lyceum remained winless after 7
outings.

The final
match of the day resulted in the sixth win for the De La Salle Green Archers
and the fourth loss for the Letran Knights, 64-45. DLSU rebounded well after
the sorry defeat to the UE Red Warriors this past weekend. Almond Vosotros led
DLSU with 16 points, hitting 4 treys, grabbing 7 rebounds, and dishing out 3
assists. Jeron Teng also redeemed himself after his subpar performance versus
UE. Teng ended up with 11 markers despite hitting just 3 of his 11 field goal
attempts. Norbert Torres anchored the middle for coach Gee Abanilla with 12
rebounds. Only pint-sized Mark Cruz scored in double-figures for the Knighs.
Cruz scored 10 points and had 4 steals. This keeps DLSU in-step with Group B
leader Ateneo, while the Knights are officially out of quarterfinal contention.
