The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: May 31, 2013 Roundup

The UST Growling Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals with their fifth win of the tournament even as the FEU Tamaraws and UP Fighting Maroons each won their respective games in action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the day’s opener, the San Beda Red Cubs remained unbeaten in Group A action. The Rizal-based cagers beat their counterparts from Muralla, the Letran Squires, 95-73. San Beda had a red-hot start, scoring 33 points in the first period alone to wrest control early, and they would never give Letran a chance. Former RP-Youth playmaker Radge Tongco led the Cubs with 19 points on 7-of-9 FG shooting, while former San Benildo star Javee Mocon drilled in 18 markers on top of 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. The frontline trio of Ivan Villanueva, Yves Sazon, and Gerdy Alacre spearheaded Letran with a combined 55 points. The Squires fell to 3 wins and 2 losses, and have been effectively eliminated from advancing to the Juniors semifinals.

The second game saw the Adamson Lady Falcons win over the FEU Lady Tamaraws and, consequently, tie their victims with 3 wins against just 1 defeat. Marianne Tongco led Adamson, who trailed for most of the game before unfurling a big rally in the payoff period that pegged the final tally, 54-52. Tongco was the only Lady Falcon to finish in double-figure scoring. She also grabbed 8 rebounds in only 19 minutes of play. On the other end, Camille Sambile had a brilliant outing with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks, while April Siat contributed 10 markers and 5 boards for FEU. The usually reliable Vangie Soriano didn’t have the best of games here, making just 3 of her 10 field goal attempts. She did, however, haul down 14 rebounds.

In the third game, the FEU Tamaraws leveled their record at 4-4 after defeating the JRU Heavy Bombers in a close one, 73-70. JRU actually had the upper hand in the first half of the game before the Moraytans steadied themselves for the pivotal second half push. In the absence of Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia, it was Anthony Hargrove who shone brightest for the Green & Gold. Hargrove shot 5-of-7 from the field to end up with 16 points while also getting 4 boards and 1 block. Mike Tolomia, Carl Cruz, and Roger Pogoy all contributed significantly, too, scoring 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. Cruz, for his part, stepped up big time with a game-high 16 rebounds to his name. Phillip Paniamogan, Marco Balagtas, and Nonoy Benavides all scored at least 11 markers to lead the Mandaluyong-based Bombers, who fell to their seventh loss in eight outings.

The fourth game featured the UP Fighting Maroons ending their otherwise forgettable tournament with their second straight win, 79-76, this time over the Perpetual Help Altas. The trio of Tata Marata, Mikee Reyes, and Raul Soyud sizzled in this encounter. Marata connected on 2 triples on his way to 16 points, Reyes scored 14 markers and dished out 4 dimes, and Soyud logged 14 points and 7 boards for the Diliman-based quintet, which now totes a 2-6 slate. Coach Ricky Dandan’s boys were actually outworked in most departments, but they did excel in taking care of the basketball. UP turned the ball over only 8 times, while forcing 12 from Perpetual. Nosa Omorogbe’s inside dominance went for naught here. Omorogbe scattered 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in an all-around effort for the losing team. He was supported by the combined 22 points of Harold Arboleda and Gerald Dizon.

The final match of the day resulted in the UST Growling Tigers booking a quarterfinals ticket at the expense of the EAC Generals, 76-75. It was another come-from-behind escape for the team dubbed the “Comeback Cats,” who were led by Jeric Teng’s 27-point explosion. Teng shot just 10-of-23 from the floor, but he also registered 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocked shots. Aljon Mariano also did well with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Kim Lo took care of playmaking with 10 markers, 6 boards, and assists. Igee King and Noube Happi each scored 17 points to lead EAC’s upset effort, while Jan Jamon and Sherwin Castro dropped 15 and 13 markers respectively. This was the fifth win for coach Pido Jarencio’s boys, while the Generals suffered their sixth loss of the tourney.
