The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: June 1-2, 2013 Roundup

It was rivalry weekend in the realm of collegiate basketball as the Ateneo teams won two of three against archrivals De La Salle, while the San Beda Red Lions beat the Soaring Falcons for win #6 in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

In the weekend’s first game, the DLSU Lady Archers beat the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 75-52. Ara Abaca has 12 points and 7 rebounds while Nickie Garcia scored 10 points and grabbed 4 boards as the green gals remained undefeated in the Women’s Division. Kay Nunez and Cara Buendia paired up for 22 points to lead Ateneo. Buendia also hauled down 10 rebounds and blocked 2 shots in the Lady Eagles’ losing effort. The ladies from Loyola remained winless after 4 outings.

The second game saw the San Beda Red Lions defeat the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 75-68. Rome Dela Rosa and Arthur Dela Cruz came up big on offense, scoring 18 and 13 points respectively to lead the Reds, but it was Baser Amer who was the star. The Davao native scattered a dozen markers, got 9 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists as SBC formalized its entry into the quarterfinals with a 6-2 win-loss record. Jericho Cruz spearheaded the Falcons’ attack with 15 points, but he shot just 6-of-17 from the floor. The inside duo of Rodney Brondial and Ingrid Sewa struggled mightily for coach Leo Austria, scoring a combined 15 points on 6-of-19 FG shooting. They did, however, haul down 26 rebounds. Adamson also entered the quarterfinals as the fourth seed of Group A.

In Saturday’s last game, the Ateneo Blue Eagles bucked the injuries to almost half of its roster, banking on the heroics of Kiefer Ravena to deflate the charge of the DLSU Green Archers, 78-70. Ateneo actually led by as many as 20 points in the third period before the Archers repeatedly mounted rallies to trim the deficit to single digits. Ravena was on fire in this one, connecting on 13 of his 22 attempts to end up with 31 points. Coach Gee Abanilla of DLSU through different looks at the Phenom (Robert Bolick, Thomas Torres, Almond Vosotros, and Jeron Teng all tried their luck), but there was just no stopping the second-generation basketball superstar. Juami Tiongson and Frank Golla backstopped Ravena with a combined 27 points. Tiongson hit 2 triples and grabbed 9 rebounds, while Golla continuously punctured the hoop from long range to end up with a dozen markers. Newcomer Chris Newsome didn’t score much, but he got the job done in other departments with 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block. The troika of Jason Perkins, Almond Vosotros, and Jeron Teng led DLSU with 15, 14, and 14 points respectively. Perkins continued to impress with 14 rebounds, while most of the other Greenies struggled to find their shots. As a team, La Salle shot just 35% from the floor. Both teams would have advanced to the next round had the Ateneans not pulled out of all their summer leagues – something they formalized after beating La Salle. This means La Salle ends up as #2 in Group B and meets San Beda in the quarterfinals. Letran rises to #4 in Group B and meets the unbeaten NU Bulldogs in the knockout phase. Other match-ups are UE against Adamson and Arellano versus UST.

The final match of the weekend took place yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena. In this game, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets scraped past the DLSZ Junior Archers, 87-85, to also advance to the Juniors crossover semifinals against San Beda. There weren’t any stats formally tallied, but I am pretty sure about the following: Mike Nieto and Thirdy Ravena led the Eaglets with 17 and 15 points respectively, while Renzo Subido’s 35-point explosion buoyed Zobel’s upset hopes. The Ateneans were in control for most of the game, but key lapses and the Junior Archers’ torrid outside shooting in the second half kept things tighter than expected. Ateneo was actually up by a significant margin late in the fourth when Zobel’s Quinito Banzon caught fire. Banzon scored 12 of his 14 points in the final few minutes of the game to leave the door open for a Junior Archer upset, but a big perimeter shot from reserve center Ivan Jose pegged the final score. Jme Escaler and Miguel Ramos each netter 10 points for the Katipunan quintet. This defeat formally eliminates Zobel from advancing to the next round. The Ateneans and Bedans meet 11am today while the San Sebastian Staglets meet the NU Bullpups in the other Juniors semifinal match.
