The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: June 3, 2013 Roundup

Playoff action in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup revved up in both the Juniors and Seniors divisions. San Beda and NU disposed of their assignments in the Juniors set, while UST and UE secured tickets to the semifinals in the Seniors wars.

In the day’s opener, the National University Bullpups survived a scare against the top team of Group B – the San Sebastian Staglets, 80-75. Unsurprisingly, Hubert Cani led NU with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, while John Cauilan anchored the interior with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Both Lorenzo Battad and Mark Dyke also chipped in significant contributions. Battad had a dozen markers, while Dyke collared 15 boards and had 2 blocks. On the other end, four Staglets scored 15 points or better, led by Lorenzo Navarro’s 19 markers. Navarro hit 4 triples, dished out 6 assists, and had 2 thefts. Alfren Gayosa, Michael Calisaan, and Ryan Costelo each registered 15 points in the loss.

The second game saw the San Beda Red Cubs dominate the Ateneo Blue Eaglets from start to finish, 89-58. Ateneo’s starting PF, Jme Escaler came down with a severe sprain barely 4 minutes into the game and his absence was adversely felt by the Blues. SBC outrebounded AHS, 47-38, and it was clear that nobody from coach Joe Silva’s boys could match the intensity of the Cubs the way Escaler might have been able to. Five Bedans scored in double-figures, led by former RP-Youth stalwart Rev Diputado’s 16 markers. He hit 3 treys and also had 5 steals. Mike Abatayo and Radge Tongco each scored 14 points, while Franz Abuda and Joshua Caracut each tallied 11. The Bedans forced 24 Ateneo turnovers in this one, clearly exploiting the fact the Loyola five was still smarting from a tough contest against archrivals De La Salle Zobel a day prior. Thirdy Ravena led Ateneo with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Mike Nieto added 11 markers and 10 boards. Ateneo will face San Sebastian for third place, while the Cubs will clash with the Bullpups for the title.

In the third game, the UST Growling Tigers upended the Arellano University Chiefs, 83-73, to book the first semifinals seat. The real Karim Abdul finally showed up for UST, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, while Jeric Teng sizzled to lead all scorers with 23 markers. Ed Daquioag also seems to be blossoming as coach Pido Jarencio’s starting playmaker. In this game, Daquioag scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds, gave 4 assists, and logged 2 steals. Kevin Ferrer also did well with 14 points off the bench. Nard Pinto and John Bangga combined for 23 points to lead AU, which missed the services of leading scorer James Forrester, who was out because of an MCL injury. The Tigers await the winner of the NU-Letran tussle on Wednesday.

The final match of the day resulted in the UE Red Warriors becoming the second team to advance to the Filoil Final Four after defeating Adamson, 66-58. Roi Sumang’s 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists led the Reds, while Chris Javier backstopped him with 11 markers. Charles Mammie didn’t score much for coach Boysie Zamar, but he did take a 14-rebound haul to rule the battle of the boards. The frontcourt duo of Rodney Brondial and Ingrid Sewa spearheaded Adamson’s losing charge with a combined output of 31 points, 21 rebounds, and 5 rejections. Wignmen Roider Cabrera and Jericho Cruz struggled big time in this one, shooting 5-of-25 from the floor to finish with a combined 15 points. The Warriors will face the winner of the De La Salle-San Beda quarterfinal pairing.
