In the first game of the day, the Egyptians thwarted the Japanese’s effort to rally in the fourth quarter en route to their second win in three games, 64-59. 6’2 wingman Ibrahim El Gammal led Egypt with 20 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds, while Mouhanad El Sabagh and Ramy Abdalla scored 13 and 10 respectively. Abdalla and Assem Marei each hauled down 7 rebounds to underscore Egypt’s dominance on the glass. Once again, the trio of Kosuke Takeuchi, Kosuke Kanamaru, and KJ Matsui led the Japanese with 14, 13, and 11 points respectively. Egypt goes up to 2-1, while Japan remains mired in the basement with a 0-3 card.

The second game featured the Iranians, playing without three of their usual starters (Mahdi Kamrani, Samad Nikkhah Bahrami, and Hamed Haddadi), struggle a bit against a very game Taiwan B squad, but they utilized a big fourth quarter surge to break the game open, 77-64. Asghar Kardoust teamed up with Rouzbeh Arghavan to lord the interior with a combined 28 points and 22 rebounds. Young up-and-coming star Mohammad Jamshidi played nearly 27 minutes in this contest and produced an impressive 15 points and 4 boards while shooting 50% from the field. Not surprisingly, Liu Cheng and Zhou Boxun led the Taiwanese with 12 and 10 markers respectively. This is Iran’s second win in as many games, while this young Taiwanese squad goes down to 1-2.

In the third game, Korea defeated the Americans by unfurling a sublime second quarter. Korea outscored the Americans in that period, 24-15, thanks mainly to the quick incursions of Kim Sun-Hyung. Four other Koreans finished in double-figures – Lee Seung-Jun with 13, Cho Sung-Min with 12, Moon Tae-Yong (a.k.a. Greg Stevenson) with 11, and Choi Bu –Kyung with 10. Team USA, made up mostly of personnel who lost the title to Gilas Pilipinas in the 2012 Jones Cup, was led by Haywood Owens’s 16, Ed Horton’s 14, and Curtis Marshall’s 14. Korea moved the ball well, earning 20 assists. Three games in, it’s still not certain which naturalized player coach Yoo Jae-Hak will take to Manila as both Lee Seung-Jun (Eric Sandrin) and Moon Tae-Young (Greg Stevenson) have been impressive in the Jones Cup. The final score read 85-79 for Korea.

The day ended with the hometown favorites, Taiwan A, getting their collective behinds swatted thoroughly by Lebanon, 83-63. Mohammad Ibrahim filled the stat-sheet with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Veteran teammates Fadi El Khatib and Ali Mahmoud scored a game total of 30 points for the Lebanese, who are still missing the services of Loren Woods and Julian Khazzouh. Taiwan’s Quincy Davis was the lone Taiwanese to breach twenty points with 23 markers while also grabbing 8 boards and blocking 2 shots. Lin Chih-Chieh, who dropped 30 on Team USA last night, did not play in this game. This win enabled Lebanon to tie Taiwan at the top half of the standings with both teams carrying 2-1 slates.

Lee Hsueh-Lin and the Taiwanese tasted defeat against the Lebanese.
