Unbeknownst to many local hoop nuts, the 2014 William Jones Cup is currently ongoing in Taiwan. This is quite understandable, of course, given how no Philippine team is competing, but I have a vested interest here because, well, I love Asian basketball. Right now, many of the teams currently playing in Taiwan feature some of the most promising young Asian hoopsters, and that’s more than enough to get my attention.
Now let’s look at the results from day eight!

KOREA over EGYPT, 73-64

South Korea trailed by six points entering fourth quarter but outscored Egypt, 22-7, in the period to complete the comeback. Ricardo Ratliffe was the driving force on both ends of the floor with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. Song Chang-Young also chipped in 16. Egypt received another strong offensive showing from Amr Abdelhalim (15 points), but he didn't have enough support. Instead, the South Koreans will head to the championship game seeking their second title in the event.
TAIWAN BLUE over USA, 96-86

The USA Pro Select squad was unable to avenge a previous defeat to Taiwan-A in the semifinals. Five different Americans reached double-figures, led by Marquin Chandler with 18, but the defensive effort wasn't as strong. Jet Chang led the charge for the Taiwanese group with 26 points and 5 rebounds, while Wu Tai-Hao added 20 points off the bench. The host nation's A squad now gets a chance to win the title on home soil against South Korea on Sunday.

JAPAN over JORDAN, 80-64

Japan didn't win a single game during the preliminary round of the competition but put together easily their best showing to knock off Jordan. Yuki Togashi led all scorers with 18 points, while Hironori Watanabe and Ryumo Ono each contributed 13 off the bench. It's a disappointing result for Jordan, which was coming off a win over Iran in its final preliminary game to finish the round at 4-3. Mohammad Hussein paced the losing side with 16 and Wesam Al-Sous also played well with 14 points and 5 rebounds.

TAIWAN WHITE over IRAN, 97-92

Iran entered the tournament having won four of the last five titles, but it will now be forced to play in the seventh-place game after a narrow loss to Taiwan-B. Mohammad Hassanzadeh had 24 points and Mohammad Ojaghi added 11, but nobody else reached double-digits. On the flip side, it was a strong effort from Chinese Taipei. Chen Ying-Chun was on target as he hit 12 of 16 shots for 33 points. Sabatino Chen and Kevin Hu provided the support with 17 and 15 points respectively as the team heads for the fifth-place game.
