Kiefer Ravena and Mike Tolomia are shoo-ins here, but how about the other three? |
Kiefer Ravena and Mike Tolomia are two of the
brightest stars outside of the PBA, and it’s no surprise they figure
prominently in these rankings. Another top-shelf SG, however, doesn’t crack the
top five – La Salle’s Almond Vosotros, who’s had to split time between
off-guard and point guard to compensate for the season-ending injury of Thomas
Torres. Joining Kief and Mike are two up-and-coming players and Kief’s old
running-mate in high school.
Without further ado, here
they are – the top five UAAP shooting guards as of August 2, 2014:
*These rankings are based
on average Player Efficiency (EFF) calculations.
**EFF = {[(points +
rebounds + assists + steals + blocks) – (turnovers + field goals missed + free
throws missed)] ÷ # of
games}
5. Von Pessumal (AdMU) – 10.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.0apg,
1.5 triples per game, .333 3pt%, 1.000 FT%, 7.8 EFF
- Von is playing a career-high 24 minutes per game
this season, and it’s no wonder he’s also putting up career-best numbers across
the board. It’s clear that he has the green light to shoot from practically
anywhere on the floor, and he has, generally, been able to establish himself as
one of Ateneo’s primary offensive weapons. His 21-point outburst against DLSU
was his coming out party.
4. Gino Jumao-as (UE) – 7.5ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.0apg,
1.3spg, 9.8 EFF
- The former San Sebastian Staglet had a great
start this season, scoring 22 points in UE’s first two games, both of which
were wins. He has struggled a little bit since then, scoring a total of 8
points against DLSU and FEU, both of which were lost contests. He has been
great in transition and finishing around the bucket, but he has yet to hit a
three this season after 6 tries. If he can be consistently productive, then UE
should really blossom as a leading championship contender.
Gino Jumao-as is slowly coming into his own in Season 77. |
3. Kyles Lao (UP) – 13.0ppg, 1.8rpg, 1.8apg,
1.3spg, .512 FG%, 9.8 EFF
- As of this writing (right before UP’s game
against UST), Lao has scored double-figures in all but one of the Fighting
Maroons’ games. He has also been one of the best in terms of FG%, and that’s
saying a lot considering this kid primarily plays from the perimeter-midrange.
Remember his 8/9 FG shooting showcase against Ateneo? Wow. Too bad he’s on such
a low-flying team.
2. Mike Tolomia (FEU) – 17.0ppg, 3.8rpg, 3.8apg,
2.5 triples per game, .455 3pt%, 11.8 EFF
- Mike Tolomia was expected to be FEU’s main man
this season, and, so far, he hasn’t disappointed, leading the Tamaraws to a 3-1
record so far. He has hit at least three triples in all but one of FEU’s
contests so far, and it really looks like he’s finally showing his true worth
now that both Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia are not around. Look for this kid to
continue his stellar play and strongly contend for the Season 77 MVP plum.
Mike Tolomia will be the barometer of how good FEU will be. |
1. Kiefer Ravena (AdMU) – 20.8ppg, 4.3rpg, 4.0apg,
1.8spg, 1.8 triples per game, .350 3pt%, .800 FT%, 16.5 EFF
- Speaking of the season MVP, most people feel
Ravena will figure significantly in that discussion. That’s no surprise, of
course, given how Ravena is so talented, athletic, and court savvy. I mean,
this guy leads the league in scoring, and is among the top three in both
assists and steals. In addition, he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder as
Season 76 was the first time he ended a season NOT the champ since 2008.
Kiefer Ravena for MVP? He's been playing like one so far. |
Outside looking in:
William Polican (AdU) – 6.0 EFF
Almond Vosotros (DLSU) – 5.0 EFF
J-Jay Alejandro (NU) – 4.0 EFF
