GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over KIA CARNIVAL, 100-89
Box Scores.
CJ Leslie and the GlobalPort Batang Pier overcame a big debut from Kia’s hulking 7-foot-3 import PJ Ramos as they clinched a 100-89 victory in the opener of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Leslie had 31 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 blocks, but he was overshadowed by a monster showing from his much larger counterpart, Ramos, who had 41 points, 20 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 blocks.
But he had much more support from his local teammates with Terrence Romeo posting 21 points and six assists and No. 1 pick Stanley Pringle adding 17 points on 8-for-10 shooting, alongside 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
GlobalPort’s defense shone here, forcing 16 Kia turnovers, which led to 18 points off TOs for the Batang Pier. Coach Eric Gonzales’s wards also ran the Carnival to the ground, getting +13 fastbreak points.
Reserve swingman Mark Yee was the only other Kia player in double-figures with 15 points. Erstwhile top gun Reil Cervantes shot just 3/18 from the floor to finish with just 8 markers.
Line of the Game: Peter John Ramos - 41pts, 20rebs, 6asts, 3blks, 15/23 FGs.
