Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - DeMarre Carroll outdueled Alan Anderson in a battle of role players to help Atlanta build a comfortable lead in the first half of Game 5. Carroll netted 19 of his 24 points in the opening 24 minutes, Horford added 20 points and 15 rebounds and the Hawks beat the Nets 107-97 to move back ahead in this Eastern Conference first-round series. They pulled within two several times in the fourth quarter and even clawed within a point on one occasion, but the Hawks always responded. Joe Johnson and Jarrett Jack netted 22 of Brooklyn's 27 points in the final frame. After Johnson sandwiched 3-pointers around a Horford jumper to cut the deficit to 97-95 with 2:20 remaining, Atlanta scored three straight baskets to put the game out of reach. Horford knocked down another jumper and a pair of Teague layups upped Atlanta's advantage to 103-95 with 42.2 ticks on the clock. Teague posted 20 points and eight assists for the Hawks, who have won 13 of their last 15 home games against Brooklyn. Three-point specialist Kyle Korver, just 12-of-37 (32.4 percent) from beyond the arc over the first four games, was 5-of-12 from long distance and finished with 17 points in the triumph. Anderson scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half for Brooklyn, which is attempting to become the first under-.500 eighth seed (38-44) to win a first-round series. Five eight seeds have beaten No. 1s in NBA history. Johnson supplied 18 points and nine boards and Jack provided 18 points and six assists in defeat.
Memphis 99, Portland 93
Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Conley and his badly swollen left eye looked on from the luxury suites before moving to the bench as the final seconds of the Memphis Grizzlies' first-round series win over the Portland Trail Blazers ticked down. Whether he'll continue to watch on from afar remains a huge question. Marc Gasol had 26 points and 14 rebounds and the Grizzlies defeated the Blazers 99-93 in Game 5 on Wednesday night. C.J. McCollum scored 16 of his 33 points in the third quarter to keep Portland within striking distance heading into the fourth, with his pull-up jumper at the buzzer making it 68-66. Conley underwent surgery Monday to repair multiple facial fractures after taking an inadvertent elbow in the third quarter of the Grizzlies' Game 3 win in Portland. The southpaw provided an update of his status during an interview with TNT's Lewis Johnson during the first quarter. Conley stated that several metal plates were inserted into the area surrounding the eye Coach Dave Joerger has said that Memphis' floor general could be out as little as a week or up as long as a month. The fifth-seeded Grizzlies will face the No. 1 seed Golden State Warriors in the next round. Courtney Lee netted 20 points and Zach Randolph added 16 points and eight rebounds for Memphis, which won a first-round series for the third time in its last five seasons. The Grizzlies snatched 15 offensive rebounds and held a 56-38 edge on the boards overall. Damian Lillard posted 22 points and six boards for the Blazers, who dropped their first-round set for the seventh time in their last eight years.
