The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters had to weather some big blows from Talk ‘N Text but managed to recover in time to win, 116-108, and even the PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-seven finals series at 1 game apiece on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Jayson Castro scored a career-best 44 points and Talk ‘N Text led by as much as 17 points in the first half, but ROS proved steadier down the stretch as they got right back into the title series.
Rain or Shine had multiple heroes, though, led by Wayne Chism, who had 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Paul Lee, who had 20 points, including 3 three-pointers.
Jeff Chan added 17, Gabe Norwood 14, and Jireh Ibanes 12 to help lift the team.
Rain or Shine got off to a great start, scoring the first seven points of the game after a lackluster showing in Game One.
But Talk ‘N Text quickly made short work of that lead as they turned it into a close game behind Castro, who showed some flashes of the greatness that he would unleash.
Castro had 27 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field and 7-for-9 from three-point range at the half. At that point, TNT was up, 62-49.
No lead is safe against Rain or Shine, though, and they came storming right back in the third. With Ryan Arana and Jeff Chan knocking down their threes, and Chism providing some all-around brilliance, the Painters went on a 22-5 run in the third to erase the Talk ‘N Text lead.
The Rain or Shine import, who scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, capped the run with a five-point possession. He was fouled on a clear path play and knocked down both free throws before sinking a triple in the ensuing possession. He helped Rain or Shine enter the fourth with an 85-84 lead.
Lee scored five points in a late 7-0 run and Ibanes chipped in a clutch alley-oop finish to eventually help keep Talk ‘N Text at bay in the final frame.
Castro, who shot 9-for-14 from three-point range, set a new finals record for most threes by a local, topping the legendary Robert Jaworski’s 35-year-old mark of 8 treys, which was set in the 1980s Open finals for Toyota.
