#PBA2015 Govs Cup Roundup: May 31, 2015

Barako Bull and San Miguel Beer continued their climb in the 2015 PBA Govs’ Cup. The Energy frustrated the slumping ROS Elasto-Painters in the first game, while the Beermen dumped rival team Ginebra in the nightcap.

The Barako Bull Energy came back from an early deficit to notch a fifth win in six PBA Governors’ Cup games at the expense of slumping Rain or Shine, 112-103, on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.


Import Liam McMorrow dominated for 32 points and 25 rebounds and was aided by a stellar performance from RR Garcia, who scored a career-high 26 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Joseph Yeo added 19, while Dylan Ababou finished with 10 in supporting roles.

Rain or Shine led, 27-18, at the end of the first quarter, but Barako Bull stormed right back in the second quarter, where they outscored their foes, 21-6, over the first six minutes to wipe away the deficit. The Elasto Painters’ import, Wendell McKines, finished with 41 points and 17 rebounds, while Paul Lee added 21. No one else, however, scored in double-figures for Rain or Shine.

Joseph Yeo dropped 19 points as Barako Bull raced to win #5.

RR Garcia waxed hot and helped the Energy stay at the top of the standings.

The San Miguel Beermen continued their winning streak after outgunning sister team Barangay Ginebra, 100-85, for a fifth consecutive win in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Import AZ Reid scored 27 points, while Chris Ross narrowly missed a triple-double with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists for the Beermen, who improved to 5-2. PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo also had a big night, scoring just 10 points but grabbing 20 big rebounds.

San Miguel looked like it would blow the game wide open after a blistering 22-3 third quarter run sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Marcio Lassiter. The Beermen opened up a 16-point lead, 63-47, with 4:56 remaining in the third.

The Kings rallied to score nine unanswered points in the fourth, however, to storm back. Japeth Aguilar also blocked Reid twice in that run as Ginebra came to within two points, 73-71. But the Beermen put together a strong finishing kick, with four different players knocking down three-pointers in a 20-7 spurt that pushed their lead back to 15, 93-78, with 1:22 remaining.

Lassiter chipped in with 13 points, while Arwind Santos added 11.

Orlando Johnson finished with 22 markers, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Urbiztondo scored 20 – all in the second half - for the Gin Kings. Japeth Aguilar had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Ginebra dropped to 2-4 in the conference.

AZ Reid put up big numbers again as the Beermen extended their winning run.
