The Star Hotshots left little doubt of their ability to go all the way in the PBA Governors’ Cup after utterly dominating GlobalPort, 126-73, in a one-sided quarterfinal series opener on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Despite coming in as the No. 5 seed against the Batang Pier, the Hotshots flashed awe-inspiring form as they forced a do-or-die clash for a spot in the semifinals.
It was the fourth largest margin in PBA history, according to PBA head of statistics Fidel Mangonon III.
Marqus Blakely posted impressive numbers with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks to pace several Star players with big contributions.
Mark Barroca scored 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting while also dishing off 5 assists. Alex Mallari and James Yap both scored 15 points, while three other locals scored eight or more points.
On the other end, Terrence Romeo led the way with 18 points and 4 triples, while Jarrid Famous underwhelmed with only 16 points on 5/13 FG shooting. Star guards Omar Krayem and Stanley Pringle also disappointed with a combined 8 markers.

ALASKA ACES over BGY. GINEBRA GIN KINGS, 114-108

The top-seeded Alaska Aces needed to come back from 16 points down but found their game at just the right time as they eliminated Barangay Ginebra from the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals, 114-108, on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Alaska, which had a twice-to-beat advantage heading into this series, advanced to the semifinals, where they will await the winner of the GlobalPort-Star pairing.
Import Romeo Travis finished with 29 points, 21 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead the Aces, while Vic Manuel and Sonny Thoss each added 14.
Alaska fell behind, 65-49, early in the third but mounted a huge comeback behind Dondon Hontiveros, who scored eight points in an 18-1 run that put them ahead late in the quarter.
Hontiveros finished with 13 markers. Cyrus Baguio also reached double figures with 10.
The Kings pushed their advantage to a high of 16 in the third quarter before the Aces finally found its rhythm.
A confrontation between Calvin Abueva and Johnson seemed to fire up Alaska as they went on a blistering 18-1 run that swung things in their favor.
Alaska led, 77-75, at the end of the third, and then took care of business in the final quarter, where they led by as many as 13, to cruise to the win.
Ginebra’s final game of the season saw Orlando Johnson drop 28 points, while Sol Mercado added 21.
