THAILAND over VIETNAM, 108-45

- The Thais enjoyed a good start here and never looked back as they moved up to 2-0 in the Group B standings. Coach Soonthornpong Mawinthorn’s wards utilized their height advantage to the hilt in this one, outrebounding Vietnam, 49-28, and outscoring them in the shaded area, 60-20. 6’5 Sukhdave Ghogar presided over much of the scoring with 19 points and 9 rebounds, while frontcourt partner Danai Kongkum added 17 points on 8/14 FG shooting. Ratdech Kruatiwa also impressed by hitting 5 threes on his way to 15 markers, while Darongpan Apiromvilaichai scored 16 of his own on 7/10 FG shooting. The losing side was paced by 18 points from Thank Nhan Nguyen.

PHILIPPINES over MALAYSIA, 100-48

- Earlier this year in the 2015 SEABA Championship, the Philippines also beat Malaysia, but the Malaysians were hiding one of their aces in that game — young frontliner Ivan Yeo. Yeo played 30 minutes in this game (the most for his team), but he was hardly a factor as the Filipinos imposed their will without end. Yeo scored 10 points for the hapless Malaysians, who are now teetering on the edge of elimination unless they can fend off Indonesia in their own encounter. No other Malaysian player broke through the double-digit barrier.
Coach Tab Baldwin called out his wards after a less-than-stellar showing in their opening game, and it seems the boys responded well. The Gilas Cadets wasted no time in showing who was the extremely better team, forcing a total of 31 turnovers and turning those opportunities into 34 points. The Pinoys built a lead as high as 57 points (!) and didn’t lay off the pedal even into the dying seconds.
Recently-graduated amateur players Almond Vosotros and Troy Rosario led the way for the victors in this one. Vosotros connected 5 times from long distance en route to scoring 21 points, while Rosario had another stirring performance with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and EIGHT steals. Star guard Kiefer Ravena played the facilitator’s role in this game, handing out 6 assists against 0 turnovers.
Gilas has now booked a ticket to the next round and will probably face the loser of the Thailand-Singapore match, which will happen on Friday, June 12.

SINGAPORE over CAMBODIA, 83-67
Box scores.
- The Singaporeans withstood a very game Cambodian side and eventually pocketed their second W in as many games. Once again, size was a big factor in this game as the home squad outworked their foes on the glass, 48-32. Cambodia, however, played aggressive defense, forcing 23 turnovers, which certainly made Singaporean coach Neo Ben Siang fume. Larry Liew and Hanbin Ng each put up 15 points to pace Singapore, which rested star guard Wong Wei Long. Big men Russel Low and Delvin Goh also impressed, combining for 22 points and 13 boards. Cambodia, meanwhile, was led by Team Captain Mith Pek, who dropped 20 points.
