#SEAGames2015 Basketball Day Two Roundup

Action in the 2015 SEA Games Men’s Basketball tournament continued on Day 2 with Cambodia brushing off Myanmar, the Philippines buckling down to beat Indonesia, and Singapore dominating the hapless Vietnamese.

Scores and Recaps:

Day 2
CAMBODIA over MYANMAR, 103-54
Box scores.
- Cambodia rebounded from a Day 1 loss to Thailand by running roughshod all over the Burmese. The Khmer quintet outshot, outrebounded, and just plainly outplayed their counterparts. Team Captain Mith Pek led the way for Cambodia with 30 points and 21 rebounds, while Sopheen Toun recorded 26 markers and 26 boards. 10 of the 12 players fielded by coach Austin Koledoye scored at least 2 points. On the other end, Myanmar just struggled big time, shooting just 32% from the field and turning the ball over 31 times. Myint Aung paced the losing side with 17 points and 9 rebounds, but he also had 10 turnovers.

Line of the Game: Sopheen Toun (CAM) - 26pts, 26rebs, 5asts, 1stl, 5 triples.

PHILIPPINES over INDONESIA, 81-52
Box scores.
- The Gilas Cadets raced to a 7-0 lead early in the game and never looked back, opening their account in the SEA Games by beating maybe the biggest challenger to them in this neighborhood — the Indons. It wasn’t a thoroughly convincing victory, however, as the Gilas Cadets committed a lot of turnovers throughout the game. That’s a great testament to Indonesia’s never quitting in the game, but it also showed a bit of sloppiness and carelessness in how the Gilas Cadets played. Kiefer Ravena led the way for the Filipinos here, dropping 16 points on 5/10 FG shooting, while big man Troy Rosario added a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double to his line. DLSU alum Almond Vosotros played his role to a T, too, putting up 14 points on the strength of 3 triples. The Pinoy defense held fast, especially in the first three quarters, and ultimately that’s what carried us to our first win.

Coach Tab Baldwin remarked postgame that he was thoroughly disappointed with how his team played. He felt that the gameplan was not executed well and that it was not “Filipino basketball.” To illustrate, Indonesia had a total of 20 turnovers, while the Gilas Cadets coughed the ball up 21 times total. Against other prospective challengers like Thailand, Malaysia, and home team Singapore, the Cadets can ill-afford to make that many mistakes again.

Nobody on coach Fictor Roring’s squad scored more than 9 points (Oki Wira Sanjaya was the one who did that). They shot 28% from the floor and just didn’t have an answer for the Pinoys’ undeniable talent. Indonesia now has to win against Malaysia to book a ticket to the semifinals.

Line of the Game: Troy Rosario (PHI) - 15pts, 11rebs, 5/10 FGs.

SINGAPORE over VIETNAM, 78-43
Box scores.
- The Singaporeans booked another W, drubbing Vietnam in today’s action. Like their previous game, the Singaporeans just played a very high level of hoops compared to their outmatched counterparts. Team Captain Desmond Oh scattered 17 points, while Lim Shengyu and Delvin Goh put up 14 and 12 points respectively. The home squad is off to a roaring start and can ensure a semis slot with a third win against Cambodia.

Line of the Game: Desmond Oh (SIN) - 17pts, 3rebs, 2asts, 1stl, 5/8 FGs.

well, singapore played weaker teams in their bracket. it would really be a test for them if indonesia or malaysia was in their group. they would be tested. philippines is the strongest team so far, and it would have been better if douthit did not play.
