SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over ALASKA ACES, 108-78
Box scores.
The San Miguel Beermen took one step towards clinching a second PBA championship in the same season after an impressive 30-point rout of Alaska, 108-78, in the opener of the best-of-seven PBA Governors’ Cup Finals on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
San Miguel opened the game on a 28-10 run and, despite Alaska coming back to within single digits, stamped its class in the fourth quarter, which it won, 31-13.
Arizona Reid posted 32 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists, while June Mar Fajardo posted huge numbers as well, with 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot added 15 points each and fellow starter Chris Lutz finished with 12, including three triples.
SMB’s lead stood at 13, 35-22, at the end of the quarter before Calvin Abueva tried to spark the Aces in the second, scoring six of the team’s first eight points.
It wasn’t until reserves Ping Exciminiano and Vic Manuel knocked down back-to-back baskets and JVee Casio added a three-pointer before Alaska made its move, coming back to within single digits, 46-37.
A couple of late three-pointers from Santos, though, helped San Miguel restore a 13-point lead, 54-41, at the halftime break.
Alaska import Romeo Travis had just two points on 1-for-7 shooting over the first two periods.
In the third period, Travis finally made an impact, trying to whittle the lead down, but timely baskets from Fajardo kept the lead at a comfortable margin for San Miguel, never going below eight points.
Travis led the losing side with just 14 points — his second lowest point total after he recorded only 13 markers in a loss to GlobalPort. The former HS teammate of LeBron James shot just 6/18 from the floor. Starting big man Sonny Thoss tossed in a dozen markers, while Calvin Abueva and Dondon Hontiveros each scored 11 off the bench.
Line of the Game: AZ Reid (SMB) - 32pts, 6rebs, 7asts, 1blk.
