The Alaska Aces banked on a big fourth quarter as they were able to come back and take Game 1 over Meralco, 97-94, to open their Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series on Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Alaska trailed by eight points, 79-71, at the end of the third quarter but went on huge 14-2 in the fourth quarter to overturn the Meralco advantage.
RJ Jazul led the Aces with 18 points while Calvin Abueva, scoreless in the first half, finished with 15 points and six rebounds.
Cyrus Baguio scored 13 points, Chris Banchero chipped in 10 from off the bench while import Rob Dozier only had seven points though he did have a team-high eight rebounds.
Meralco led 82-73 in the fourth quarter when Alaska came out with the telling rally.
The Aces outscored the Bolts, 26-15, in the fourth quarter.
It wasn’t all good news for Alaska, though, as Abueva seemed to hurt himself late in the game. While stepping past Dillinger, who was down on the floor, the Alaska forward slipped and dropped into an unintentional split. He remained on the ground for a while, looking like he stretched his groin before being helped off the floor.
The Aces have already missed the services of Vic Manuel and JV Casio..
Hugnatan had 21 points to pace Meralco, while Hodge finished with 14. Onuaku had 11 points and 18 big rebounds for the Bolts.
