THAILAND over INDONESIA, 89-44

- The hosts unloaded early and often on Indonesia, which was bannered by a hodgepodge of players from the bottom four NBL clubs eliminated from the 2016 playoffs. Kannut Samerjai played sparingly, but he did most of the initial damage for the Thais, who are hoping to bag their second golden finish in a SEABA men’s tournament (They won the 2013 SEABA Championship in Medan, Indonesia). Nakorn Jaisanuk and Chitchai Ananti combined for 26 points to lead Thailand, which also drew 13 points off the bench from Jittaphon Towaeroj. Big men Sukdave Ghogar and Patipan Klahan also shone for coach Tim Lewis, grabbing 13 and 12 rebounds respectively. Indonesia had only one guy in double-figures — Surliyadin Surliyadin, who tallied 13 markers. This was an unmistakable statement game from the Thais, who are tagged as the #1 threat to thwart the Filipinos’ efforts to rule the competition.

GILAS CADETS over MALAYSIA, 108-84

- The Gilas Cadets of coach Nash Racela endured a jittery start before finding their rhythm and trouncing the Malaysians on opening day. Try as they might, the Filipinos just couldn’t fully pull away from their foes in this one, despite the scoreline registering a 24-point blowout. Despite the gap, it felt like Malaysia was within striking distance throughout most of the game, though the difference in talent was clear from the get-go. TOp 2015 PBA Draft pick Troy Rosario lived up to his billing, scoring 19 points and grabbing 8 rebounds to lead the Pinoys, while FEU stalwarts Mike Tolomia and Mac Belo also did well with 13 and 16 points respectively. Gilas controlled the boards here, 57-40, but a slew of Filipino errors early in the game meant Malaysia would be able to stick close. Four Malaysians finished in double-figures, led by Yi Hou Wong’s 22 points off the bench. Chee Kheun Ma and Yoong Jing Kwaan backstopped him with 15 and 12 markers respctively.
