#PBA2017 Commish Cup Roundup: April 22, 2017

Game Capsules:

STAR HOTSHOTS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 96-90
Box Scores. 

Star snapped a two-game slide in the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup, scoring a 96-90 victory over the Blackwater Elite  Saturday at the MOA Arena.

Losing control as Blackwater rode the hot hands of KG Canaleta, the Hotshots had to rely on a total team effort in the final period to secure the win.

The Hotshots now head into the All-Star break with an impressive 5-2 mark.

Import Tony Mitchell led a balanced Star offense, scoring 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Paul Lee meanwhile led six locals with at least nine points as the veteran guard dropped 15. Rookie Jio Jalalon was good for 13 points off the bench.

Canaleta led the Elite with 27 points but went scoreless in the fourth period. Blackwater now dropped to 1-6 after losing back-to-back games.

Import Greg Smith contributed 22 points, 29 rebounds, and six assists. (ABS-CBN.com)

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS, 111-98
Box Scores. 

Charles Rhodes finished with a game-high 26 points, while Arwind Santos scored all of his 13 in a pivotal 2nd-quarter run to help San Miguel beat Rain Or Shine 111-98 in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

Gaby Espinas, who came off the bench like Santos, added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, while Alex Cabagnot finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, as 3 other Beermen scored in double digits.

Shawn Taggart registered 24 points and 10 rebounds for Rain Or Shine, which dropped to 4-3. Maverick Ahanmisi added 16 points for the Elasto Painters, who were out-assisted 25-13.

It was San Miguel's 4th straight game scoring more than 100. The Beermen shot 52% from the field (43 of 82), compared to Rain Or Shine's 42% (37 of 87). (ABS-CBN.com)

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals started with a lot of drama as Rain or Shine prevailed in the playoff for the #8 seed while TNT and Star had big victories.

Game Capsules: 

RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 103-80
Box Scores. 

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters ensured their entry into the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals after crushing the Blackwater Elite, 103-80, in a knockout playoff game on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Jay Washington posted 15 points and eight rebounds while rookie Mike Tolomia scored 14 points – all of them in the second half – as Rain or Shine booked the eighth and last spot in the quarterfinal round.

The Star Hotshots and TNT Ka Tropa each nailed big wins to solidify their quarterfinals spots in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup.

STAR HOTSHOTS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 111-95

The Star Hotshots leaned on their plethora of weapons to annihilate the Blackwater Elite, 111-95, and boost their Oppo PBA Philippine Cup playoff chances on Wednesday at Cuneta Astrodome.

Allein Maliksi exploded for 26 points spiked by five triples while Paul Lee and Justin Melton each made 15 markers.

Weekend action in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup reached fever pitch and was highlighted by wins from Meralco, Ginebra, and San Miguel Beer.


Game Capsules: 

MERALCO BOLTS over RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS, 82-72
Box Scores. 

The Meralco Bolts finally put an end to their miseries as they knocked off the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 82-72, to snap a six-game losing skid and remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup Friday at Cuneta Astrodome.

Chris Newsome paced the Bolts with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, while Cliff Hodge collected 17 points and 16 boards for the Bolts (3-7) who pumped some life into their slim quarterfinal hopes.

Blackwater continued their impressive rise in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup, while the Hotshots caught a big fish by winning over TNT.

BLACKWATER ELITE over ALASKA ACES, 103-100
Box Scores. 

The Blackwater Elite snapped a two-game losing skid after holding off a comeback attempt from the Alaska Aces, 103-100, to move back up the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup standings on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Mac Belo scored 21 big points, including a crucial three-pointer that ended an 11-0 Alaska run, while Roi Sumang scored 19 points – 17 of those in the second half – to lead Blackwater to their fifth win in nine games this conference.

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup opened 2017 in a big way as GlobalPort, San Miguel Beer, and NLEX all came up with wins to welcome the new year!


Game Capsules: 

GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over MERALCO BOLTS, 97-89
Box Scores. 

The GlobalPort Batang Pier broke out of a two-game skid while also adding to the struggles of the slumping Meralco Bolts as they cruised to a 97-89 victory in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Romeo posted 27 points, alongside five rebounds and five assists, to lead GlobalPort which improved to 4-3 in the standings.

KG Canaleta scored 13 points while Billy Mamaril had a big game with 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Mike Cortez added 12 markers while JR Quinahan chipped in with 11 points.

Stanley Pringle scored nine points but grabbed nine rebounds in the win.

Meralco, which was led by Reynel Hugnatan’s 23 points, dropped a fourth straight defeat as they fell to 2-5. (Interaksyon.com)

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over BLACKWATER ELITE, 118-93
Box Scores. 

San Miguel rang in the new year with a bang and clamped down on Blackwater, 118-93, Friday in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup at Mall of Asia Arena.

June Mar Fajardo made mincemeat of the opposition, scattering 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks to keep the Beermen on top with a 6-1 record, formalizing their entry to the playoffs.

Gabby Espinas also had 22 markers and six boards off the bench, while Marcio Lassiter had 14 points on a 4-of-6 shooting from threes.

Alex Cabagnot also played despite his broken nose, finishing with 14 markers, nine rebounds, and three dimes in the victory.

Art dela Cruz topped Blackwater with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Aguilar had 15 markers, 10 coming in the fourth.
Mac Belo was held to just four points in the tiff, as the Elite shot 7-of-17 from the free throw line.

NLEX ROAD WARRIORS over TNT KA TROPA, 110-98
Box Scores. 

The NLEX Road Warriors pulled away with a late fourth quarter run as they hurdled the TNT KaTropa, 110-98, in an out-of-town Oppo PBA Philippine Cup clash on Saturday at the AUF Sports and Cultural Center in Angeles, Pampanga.

NLEX and TNT were in a heated contest before the Road Warriors closed the game out on a 17-4 run to seal the win.

Carlo Lastimosa led the way with 22 points, including seven during NLEX’s finishing kick. Sean Anthony had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while three other players reached double figures for the Road Warriors, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

MAHINDRA FLOODBUSTER over BLACKWATER ELITE, 97-93

The Mahindra Floodbuster ensured that they would have a Merry Christmas after putting an end to their five-game losing streak by downing the Blackwater Elite, 97-93, in an overtime duel on Christmas Day at the Philippine Arena.

Mahindra, which notched its first win in the 2016-17 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup, improved to 1-5. Blackwater, which just set a new franchise mark for wins in a single conference, dropped to 4-3.

The Blackwater Elite hit a new milestone for the franchise after they stumped the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 99-91, in an Oppo PBA Philippine Cup clash on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

With the victory, Blackwater improved to 4-2, marking the first time in franchise history that the team has reached four wins in a single conference. The previous franchise record was three wins and this current Elite team topped it with five games left to play in the elimination round.

The Blackwater Elite shook off their recent slump as they got back on the winning track with a victory over the NLEX Road Warriors, 96-85, in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Arthur Dela Cruz led Blackwater with 18 points and eight rebounds while Kyle Pascual added 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field.

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup continued to heat up this week. Phoenix had a big upset win over SMB last Wednesday, while Rain or Shine also throttled past Mahindra. Just last night, it was GlobalPort who prevailed over Star even as TNT handed Blackwater its first loss of the season.

Balik-import Elijah Millsap scored 25 points and 14 rebounds in his PBA return although he got fouled out in the fourth quarter to pace the Beermen (8-3) who, currently at third place, could still end up at No.2 should TNT KaTropa win over Barangay Ginebra in the main game.

GlobalPort ended their season on a bright note even as Ginebra kept their chances for stealing the top seed alive with a win over Phoenix last Wednesday.

Henry Walker exploded in the fourth quarter to ignite a huge run by the NLEX Road Warriors who sneaked past the Mahindra Enforcer, 82-81, in the PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Walker fired 17 of his 39 points in the final frame to help NLEX (3-3) erase an eight-point deficit late in the game for their second straight game of the conference.

Friday was packed with action in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup as as Rain or Shine defeated Blackwater and TNT Ka Tropa outlasted Alaska.

RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 98-92
Box Scores. 

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters took the fight out of the Blackwater Elite to pull off a 98-92 victory in the PBA Governors’ Cup Friday at Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Jeff Chan set the tone for Rain or Shine, burying four triples in the opening period alone en route to 20 points.

Dior Lowhorn also tallied 20 points as well as 12 rebounds. Paul Lee added 14, while JR Quinahan scored 11 points including the game-winning free throws that handed Rain or Shine (2-1) its second straight win.

TNT KA TROPA over ALASKA ACES, 120-118
Box Scores. 

TNT KaTropa never ran out of ammunition as it outdueled the Alaska Aces in a high-scoring duel, 120-118, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Friday at Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Jayson Castro scored 26 points to lead six KaTropa players who scored at least 14 points.

Mo Tautuaa registered 18 points, while Ryan Reyes sizzled for 15 points on five out of six triples. Ranidel De Ocampo also collected 17 points and 11 boards.

Imports Michael Madanly and Mario Little scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, as TNT improved to 3-0 and grabbed a share of the top spot in the team standings.

La Dontae Henton top-scored for the Aces with 35 points. Dondon Hontiveros finished with 22 on perfect four-of-four triples, RJ Jazul tallied 19 points, and Chris Banchero made 18 markers for Alaska which fell to 1-2.
