AHS BLUE EAGLETS over UE JUNIOR WARRIORS, 79-53
The Eaglets bounced back from a bitter loss to the Tiger Cubs last week by blowing out the UE Junior Warriors. In the process, Ateneo finally notched its first win in the San Juan Arena (a.k.a. the Filoil Flying V Arena) this season.
It was fab freshman Jolo Mendoza who struck the hardest for the Katipunan quintet, scoring 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from the line. He was backstopped by the dynamic playmaking of sophomore standout Matthew Nieto, who scored 8 points and dished out 5 assists. Meanwhile, the Blue & White interior was patrolled well by the trio of Bolek Vitangcol, Mike Nieto, and Jme Escaler, all of whom combined for 18 points and 25 boards.
Despite what the final spread might suggest, however, the game wasn’t a blowout from the get-go. The Junior Warriors of Coach Billy Reyes actually stayed within striking distance of the Eaglets in the first half, which ended with the Loyola five up by 10.
Things started to unravel, however, in the third quarter. It was clear that the Ateneans wanted to put UE away already, but the gritty Reds refused to simply serve up the win on a silver platter. Behind four straight points from Renan Pangilinan, the Junior Warriors came to within 10 points with about 6 more minutes to go in the third stanza.
And then the deluge began.
Mio Puno’s three-point play ignited a blistering run by Ateneo. The Eaglets outscored UE, 21-5, in the next 6 minutes to really bust the game open and leave the opposition in the dust. Mendoza scored 8 points in that decisive run, including a three-pointer with 25 seconds to go in the quarter that gave the Blues a commanding 26-point bubble heading into the last 10 minutes.
It was all clear from that point as the Eaglets reeled in the victory and climbed back to .500 in the team standings.
This was a good win because it gave a significant degree of confidence back to a squad that was erstwhile winless in this particular arena, and that was still hurting from the loss to UST last Friday. This triumph puts Ateneo in a good position to finish the first round with a winning record as they face De La Salle Zobel on Friday. The Junior Archers are also sporting a 3-3 slate.
