The NBA: March 2013 Position Battle – The Top 5 Small Forwards Right Now

LeBron James continues to be miles ahead of the competition (including Kevin Durant), while golden oldies Paul Pierce and Shawn Marion make appearances! It’s a curious collection of the young and old!

Note: All of the following stats are based on the last five games of each player’s team as computed by HoopsStats.com.

5. Shawn Marion (DAL) - 13.0ppg, 9.5rpg. 3.0apg, 1.5spg, .600 FG%. .500 3pt%. 21.5 EFF
The Matrix came back from injury to record an 11-13 double-double versus Boston and 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals against Utah. Both games were won by Dallas.

4. Carmelo Anthony (NYK) - 28.7ppg, 7.3rpg, 1.0spg, 1.0bpg, 21.7 EFF
After missing three games, Melo came back to score AT LEAST 21 in each of his last three encounters, which are all NYK wins by the way. This includes scoring a combined 65 points in two straight games against the Raptors.

3. Paul Pierce (BOS) - 20.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 5.6apg, 1.2bpg, .557 FG%, .600 3pt%, 22.4 EFF
The Truth scored at least 26 points in two of his last five games and flirted with a triple-double versus Miami. Strangely enough, however, the Cs have lost four of their last five matches.

Paul Pierce can still hack it with the best of 'em.

2. Kevin Durant (OKC) - 29.2ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.6spg, 1.4bpg, .896 FT%, 26.8 EFF
There was only one game this past month where KD didn’t score 20 or more, and that was his 19-point effort against, of all teams, Charlotte more than two weeks ago. Still, if Durantula wants a clear shot at the MVP, he’ll need to do more than score.

1. LeBron James (MIA) - 29.0ppg, 9.4rpg, 9.6apg, 2.4spg, 1.6bpg, .576 FG%, 38.4 EFF
Yeah yeah yeah. LBJ is the best player on the planet right now. And his team is just 7 wins away from tying the longest winning streak in NBA history. Blah blah blah. Stuff it. Here’s to hoping Chicago, San Antonio, or the Knicks can stop the bleeding (yes, it IS a bleeding).
